First of all, you should close ALL applications except EXPLORER and SYSTRAY when you defrag, if that doesn't work, go into safe mode. Are you running any programs or opening any folders or accessing/writing/editing files from safe mode? If so, just start the defrag, and don't go near the machine until it's done.

Run scandisk first.

If you have a screensaver, disable it.

Replace the 98 version of fdisk with the ME version. If you can't find a download site I'll email it to you.

Add this line to the [386Enh] section of your system.ini file:

ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

by using SYSEDIT. This keeps the swap file use minimal. (Whenever the swapfile changes, defrag restarts.) Then restart the computer so the new file takes affect.

Oops. When I said "Replace the 98 version of fdisk with the ME version" it should read 'defrag' instead of 'fdisk'.

In safe mode I'm not sure if system.ini loads so the added line may not make any difference. But it's good to keep it in there anyway.

In normal mode, as Faris_B mentions, close all running progams. You do this by doing a Ctrl-ALT-DEL and closing everything except explorer.

Exactly. Also, I'm pretty sure that SYSTEM.INI is not loaded in safe mode, as of last year, my computer was messed up and there were MAJOR problems in normal mode for windows, including NO mouse pointer but in safe mode I had one so I think it does. Also, SYSTEM.INI was corrupted and full of gibberish.

And isn't the first 10% of DEFRAG basically a scandisk? One time, during that phase, it told me to run scandisk because the HD had errors on it, I ran it then it defragged. Paul didn't mention this as far as I know but he should run it anyway. He got to 13% before restarting.

Messed up there on that part about SYSTEM.INI, I meant to say it does NOT use it in safe mode.

Finally found a download for ME defrag. Seems all other links are dead or the file has been removed. Here it is.

The author of the page rambles on quite a bit. Basically you need to unzip the downloaded file to the windows folder (or copy it there after you unzip it). You can rename the old version beforehand if you want to keep it or just copy the ME version over it.

Yeah, the first 10% of defrag should catch any problems that scandisk can fix. If the problem persists a surface scan may be a good idea too.

Safe Mode:

Windows boots using a batch file called system.cb instead of the standard system.ini file.

If you get people asking the wrong questions, you don't have to worry about the answers

... (left this out) - then it loads selected parts of system.ini & win.ini, etc. as described in the link

Install the WinME defrag as suggested as it is 5 times faster then Win98's defrag tool.

You can run defrag from the registry's RunOnce key allowing it to run prior to anything else loading.

----Copy below this line----
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx]
"Flags"=dword:00000003
"Title"="Defrag at Startup"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx\Defrag]
"Cmd"="||DEFRAG.EXE /ALL"

----Copy above this line----

Paste it into Notepad.
Go to File, Save
Name it "defrag.reg" with the quotation marks so it saves it with the .reg extension instead of .txt.
Save it to your desktop for now.

Double click on defrag.reg, Click Yes to merge it into your registry and restart your PC.

Defrag will run after you see the blank desktop and before any programs (including Explorer) loads.

Regards,
Bryan

He dosnt mention how much hard drive space he has left. Maybe thats why he cant defrag. No space to move files about. One of my lasses out pc's used to do that at about 80% I found it was a 100MB temp file defrag couldnt move. So would also suggest cleaning out the temp folder and the teporary internet files also the recycle bin.

Are you trying the 'thorough' scan in safe mode?
Maybe you should download a diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturer's web site.

Run the hard drive diagnostic from a bootable floppy. You might want to try the scandisk 'thorough' from a bootable floppy also.

Just a thought, but you might want to also turn off your anti-virus.

It's unusual for AV's to cause this but I suppose with computers there is always a possibility.
