i am currently using win 98 se and recently i cannot connect to the internet no matter what i do. the modem begins to dial up as normal and it connects but the web pages do not display and i get the error page saying " cannot connect to server....this page cannot be displayed"

1.Check on the internet explorer connection properties, disable autmatical detection under lan settings, disable proxy if enabled.
2. Under dial up networking in my computer, right click on the connection u use to connect to your ISP and enable only TCP/IP. Remove Log On to network .
3. RUN winipcfg after connected and under
advanced tab just make a note of the DNS ip's and verify the same with your ISPBy Now your connection should be working.
post in your feedbacks.Regards,
Vinay

Change from never dial a connection to always dial my default connection in internet options in the control panel.

Hi Obinna
Sounds like your TCP/IP is corrupted. You say that your modem connects, but no data transfer occurs. After you connect, click on the internet icon on your taskbar, and check the number of bytes sent and received. If its a TCP/IP problem these will only be near 500 or so.
If you are not comfortable doing it, ring up your ISP and ask them to help you reinstall.Get your Windows CD ready. Open Control Panel, click on Network and then highlight TCP/IP and click on remove.
How to Install the TCP/IP Protocol
After Dial-Up Networking is installed (or if Dial-Up Networking is already installed), install the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol. To do this:
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
Click Add on the Configuration tab, click Protocol, click Add, click Microsoft in the Manufacturers box, click TCP/IP in the Network Protocols box, and then click OK.
If you want to connect only to the Internet, you need only the following network components:
Client for Microsoft Networks Dial-Up Adapter TCP/IP
To remove a component, click the component, and then click Remove.NOTE: You can have additional protocols bound to the dial-up adapter if you need them to connect to other Dial-Up Networking servers.
After the necessary components are installed, click OK, and then restart your computer when you are prompted to do so.Hope that settles your problem.
