Subject: Cannot connect to Internet at All!!
Comment:

Hi all,

I've been troubled by this problem for months. After I use Windows98 SE for some weeks, all of a sudden, when I turn on my computer, I cannot connect to the Internet (this includes any Internet access) anymore. I don't know why/when it happens. I have to reinstall Windows to make it work again.

I'm using @Home cable modem service through a D-Link 528 PCI ethernet card running on Windows98 SE. I don't think it's the problem of the cable modem company since when I boot into LINUX, there's no problem at all using the Internet.

Does anyone know what's going on? I'm desperate to find out why this happens and how to resolve the problem.

Any help is appreciated.
Thank you. : )

Do you get any error messages? What are they? Is the modem seen by the OS? Are there any conflicts (look in Device Mgr.)?
Did it work before installing SE? Do you have your system set up to automatically dial out when booting? Please be more specific.

Try the thing in the reply above first and post the results, but then try deleting ALL of the drivers and software Windowz used to use to connect to the net before the problem, and do a reboot (shutdown preferable) and Windowz should find everything again by it self at startup. (also try deleting the Ethernet driver, provided you have them on hisk or whatever). Oh yes, D
****************DO NOT DELETE THE DRIVERS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE WINDOWS CD OR HAVE NOT LOADED THE CABS ON YOUR HD********* (very important)

hello,

thank you for the reply.

>Do you get any error messages?
I didn't get any error messages.
Of course, when I tried to connect to Internet, the computer complained about my network status.

>Is the modem seen by the OS?
I don't see any modem in my windows setting (as usualy). I'm using a cable modem. I've never seen my computer detecting a cable modem and it worked fine.

>Are there any conflicts (look in Device Mgr.)?
No conflicts at all.

>Did it work before installing SE?
Yes. It also works after installing SE. It is just that after some weeks, windows suddenly cannot connect to Internet anymore.

>Do you have your system set up to automatically dial out when booting?
I'm using cable modem. There's no need for dialing. When Windows98 boots up, I automatically have access to Internet.

Thank you. : )

hi anon,

I did delete my Ethernet card driver and reinstall it. However, it still doesn't work.
The ethernet card driver is the only piece of software I can think of that's related to Internet service on my computer. I'm not using a dialup Internet service; I don't have to install any modem driver.

Thank you for the reply. : )

I have cable modem, and it sounds like your configuration of the ethernet card is incorrect. Try deleting the gateways, and dns entries for the ethernet card, and download CCMInfo from www.rhtc.net (you need not configure your card. You can choose when your cable modem connects, and hangs up. You can choose for auto dial, or manual. I suggest manual. Auto dial (what you are doing now) always seems to get screwed up. One more thing. If the problem happens again, try unplugging the cable moden for 30 sec, shutdown, plug in cable modem, and let it go through it's tests, then boot up system.
