I want to give away my old PC running Win98 and would like to remove my stored passwords. In IE6, when I go to Internet Options>Content>AutoComplete and click Clear Passwords, the PC hangs up indefinitely. How can I clear off my passwords?

Patrick,
Which passwords do you mean??, logon passwords???,

If so, try this, Click Start >Find > then type *.pwl, this will find all password files on your pc, once found you can delete them,

hope this helps

From what I remember, removing the battery (and I assume that's what you mean by CMOS, Mar), will only clear a BIOS password.

Partick, check and see if there are any pwl files. If there are, delete them.

Better yet, if you're giving away the computer, just reformat and reinstall the OS. OR...reformat and let the person who you're giving the machine to install what he/she wants.

G'day Patrick, go to this post 111588 and it tells you the location of the AutoComplete list for passwords and search strings etc..

Delete everything under the CLSID number and it's all gone.

Also delete the SPW key at this location too

Hkey_Current_User
.+ Software
..+ Microsoft
...+ Windows
....+ Internet Explorer
.....+ IntelliForms
......+ SPW

Also empty your cache folders and delete the index.dat files or just deltree them from Dos and this will cover your tracks a bit too.

But as Jennifer recommends, a clean start [format/reinstall] is the least you can do for somebody.
