i have looked through yours, and many other forums. i am trying to get into windows 98 and i cannot boot it up. i have a startup disk and i got all the way to the basic command prompt for a:\ drive. i then typed the disk/mpf thing and the sys c:. i rebooted and it just opens to a blank command prmpt. though at the top it just says "microsoft (R) windows 98 (c) copyright microsoft corp 1981-1999" then gives the command prompt line ( c:\>). i typed win. nothing happened. typed scanreg /fix. nothing. tried anything and everything i saw on this site, but to no avail. what the heck did i do? i have not received any error messages recently except the first one that said "invalid disk... replace and hit enter to continue" which i read meant that you may need the startup disk to continue. so i did. i even tried starting up in all modes (prompt only, safe, normal, bootlog, all default back to this darn c:\ prompt which i cannot get out of. does this mean my only option is to re-install the os from the cd? please let me know. sorry to have caused so much trouble.

It will boot on its own to a C:\ prompt?

Try entering this:

type c:\msdos.sys

.. is there only a line or two displayed, or does it fill the screen?

Hey Jboy, welcome to cholbach revisited!

Daniel, after you have tried Jboys suggestion, can you type dir c: then press enter? Tell us the first ten lins it returns.

I'm guessing Windows was installed and was working at one time and that the Windows files & folders still exist(?)
Despite the length of the post, not a great deal of information was imparted

If MSDOS.SYS only consists of a couple of lines, then possibly replacing it with the 'full' version will correct things.

Oops, I'm forgetting cultural differences!

In my part of the world, Hey (followed by a name) is a friendly greeting. In the Americas it's more like a warning or threat.

Jboy, I meant that as a friendly greeting. Sorry if you thought otherwise.

Something scrambled your logical disk structure.

If there is data on the HD you cannot afford to lose, you'd better put the HD in another box and save what you can.

The guide suggested above is for an install using a Microsoft installation CD. Since you have a Compaq, you will have to follow Compaq's instructions for restoring your system.

Daniel - you may still be able to salvage some files from the drive, but it won't be easy. Those renamed directories are due to scandisk finding some serious errors on the disk. As suggested, if you have another machine you could attach this drive as a slave and see what (if anything) you can rescue.

Reinstallation is probably your best bet, but any errors on the disk must be corrected - probably simplest to reformat first.

Rimfire - no worries, 'hey' is a form of casual greeting here in Canada too

Well, it doesn't sound all that bad other than the loss of data. What you want to hope is that the errors on the drive are logical (correctable) and not physical (permanent) due to actual damage to the drive.

If there are so many errors that scandisk becomes overwhelmed, as indicated, it may be best to wipe out the files by formatting rather than attempt to repair all of them.

Even if the drive does turn out to be unrepairable - which I doubt - replacing the HDD isn't all that difficult.
