I just tried downloading an unoffical update for Windows 98SE its the unnoficial special pack v.1.5 found at http://www.win31.cjb.net the sep15.exe
Now i cant boot up windows all i keep getting is:
Microsoft Registry Checker
Backing Up Registry Files--->
Restoring System Files-->You have restored a good registry
Windows found an error in your system and restored a recent back up of the files to fix the problem please restartthen after restart the message just repeats! please help!!

Try hitting F8 on bootup. Select boot with command prompt only. Type scanreg/restore and choose a good registry file with a date prior to this problem.

I tried F8 but even after going back to an earlier date the same message comes up.
I went to Safemode and it says the following file was replaced which caused an error. And to run windows disk.
following file:
c:\windows\system\winaspi.dll
So i run my windows disk and go over it with windows or what i dont understand?
How do i delete it in safe mode

Safe mode should have it in the same place as in normal mode, goto Start/Settings/Control Panel, goto Add/Remove Programs and it should be within.
I've never installed the "update" myself, but as soon as I can utilize my internet on my machine again, I will. There may be an uninstall directory and icon inside your Start/Programs directory as well, but I don't know yet.
HTH, post back with the results.

Ok i can open the programs directory but i am not sure what the program is called.
I think it could be this one though i am not sure:
Windows SR2.0

As I've said, I've never installed the "update", so I'm not sure. Someone else who's installed it, or the author would be able to say better than I.
The home page of the 'UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service Pack 1.5'. There's an e-mail at the URL too.

If you hadn't mentioned the update (which I shall avoid) I would have suspected a problem with one of your RAM sticks.
I suppose there is still a vague possibility that some RAM problem just happened to arise when you were installing this update.
Depending on your RAM arrangements you might be able to check one stick at a time, if you think it's worth trying.

It looks sound. It prevents the system from scanning the registry.

My initial reaction to disabling registry scan was shock horror, but when I looked in my MSDOS.SYS there was no such entry. Presumably it is not normally present anyway.
Take a security copy of MSDOS.SYS before you do any editing.
There are two files worth putting on a floppy for security anyway (noting their locations):
MSDOS.SYS
VMM32.VXDBoth files are produced when you install W98 (MSDOS.SYS is not on the CD and the CD version of VMM32.VXD is only a shell and should not be used as replacement).
