Comment:

I have a Win98 machine that cannot ping or go to web pages. It gives the DNS error when I try to go to web pages and no responce when pining IPs. I have reinstalled IE, reinstalled DUN, TCP/IP, Dialup adaptor, and removed and reinstalled winsocks so far. I can't think of anything else I can do. I even hooked the computer up to DSL and that doesn't work also. Any suggestions would help!

If you connect via 56K modem can you hear it pickup the line and dial?

if it's a direct connect from DSL modem to computer i think you'll need some PPPoE software to make the connection.

Since a multitude of causes exist for the Error message: "Page cannot be displayed or DNS error" and you have already considered many and done the troubleshoot, you may check from the list below causes you might have overlooked:

1. Internet Explorer connection settings are incorrect.
2. An incorrect entry exists in a Hosts file.
3. The Winsock.dll, Wsock32.dll, or Wsock.vxd file is missing or damaged.

4. There are multiple copies of the Winsock.dll, Wsock32.dll, or Wsock.vxd file, or one of these files is in the wrong folder.
5. Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is not installed or is not functioning correctly.
6. The WinSock2 registry key is damaged.
7.The Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) installation is damaged or is not functioning.
8. The Rnr20.dll file is missing or damaged or the "Library Path" value in the following registry key is missing or contains the wrong location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2\
Parameters\NameSpace_Catalog5\Catalog_Entries\000000000001

9. If you are using America Online (AOL) or CompuServe, there may be parental control restrictions applied to the account.
10. Incorrectly configured or non-functioning firewall or proxy software.

Hope this helps.

Just in case someone else comes along with the same problem and checks this post, I have found the best website to resolve this "connection" issue. It is a perfect, logical walk through of every corner for all the windows components involved.

I have had the same problem with different machines and fixed both the hard way, trial and error fix's over a long period of time. I'm serious when I say I have a laptop that wasn't used for a year and half until I cracked the solution a week ago. And what was it >

After having done EVERYTHING , including running winsock repair programs, and all the networking installs.......this worked

1. ran ws2bakup.bat from dos
2. reinstalled DUN (again)
3. deleted wsock32.dll from system in safe mode
4. reboot
5. connection successful

In some computer situations you can get lucky with a simple procedure that may involve a winsock, DUN, TCP/IP OR IEX fix/repair. But on a hundred other pc's you are going to end up checking everything, and then one final fix gets you going again. I am really into this "page cannot be displayed" connection issue and have yet to see one solution for all, there needs to be some software for it, because it is crippling thousands, especially AOL users.

WINSOCK files are critical in this solution most of the time. And they are corrupted by so many different programs, especially AOL, that it's just best to replace them with original CAB versions before you get lost in the myriad of solutions.

Ok, I'm blabbing too much,
here is the website that can solve this problem if you really are stuck > CONNECTION FIX
