Struggling with getting access to internet but I still can send and receive emails.... tried fixing and reinstalling windows 98.. and IE 6.0. Netscape 4.7 does not work either... I can download virus patches also so I don't think it is a hardware issue .... any ideas?

Hi,
This problem is usually associated with a broken winsock (LSP) chain, probably from a deleted spyware program that had already hijacked your winsock connection, , have you removed any software? deleted a spyware program / Kazaa / Virtual Bouncer / SAHagent /Internet Accelerator etc /MSBB.EXE / Web3000 / nCase.. etc

Reinstalling almost never works because the settings are in the registry and they will remain, however, restoring your registry back to it's (original 1st boot creation) will fix it, that is the very last thing to try because you will lose all recent programs that are installed, but much easier than a clean format/install.

Hierarchy of troubleshooting:
a) reinstall the program that broke the connection if known,
b) run a winsock fix such as Lspfix.exe or Ws2sock.exe
c) reinstall your DUN (dial up networking) along with your TCP/IP protocols
d) reinstall the winsock2 registry key simultaneously with your TCP/IP
E) extract new copies of wsock32.dll and winsock.dll from your cabs
f) check for xtra copies of winsock.dll, wsock32.dll, rnr20.dll and delete them,
g) restore registry to system's 1st boot using system.1st , < always works but is the last resort

Addressing your situation specifically now, reinstall any program you may have removed from add/remove programs in your control panel or elsewhere even if it's spyware, it can be fixed after your connection's restored, if nothing was removed, then >

Clear out all your cache folders completely.

Go to START / SHUTDOWN / RESTART IN MS DOS MODE
You will see the command prompt C:/>

Now type the following commands exactly and hit enter after each:

cd windows
smrtdrv
deltree history
deltree cookies
deltree tempor~1

Use the 'Y' key to confirm when asked,
Type win to return to windows or crtl alt del to reboot, or shutdown and restart. Test connections,

Now you want to run the Lspfix.exe,
You can download it here LSPFIX.EXE

Download on to your desktop, double click to run, follow the instructions, reboot, and see if you connections are restored,

If it doesn't, then download W2fix.exe here W2fix.exe

See how far that gets you and post back,

:)

Tgerbs,

There is a typo in that command for Smartdrv, it should have been spelled smartdrv but it's not needed for success, it is only for 'speeding' up your deletion process, which you got through ok,

As for reformatting, might not work, have seen this happen many times, but restoring the registry to system.1st will,

Since you did the W2fix.exe make sure that your TCP/IP protocols were reinstalled,

go to your control panel / network /

Open network, do you see all your protocols? You should see 'client for microsoft' , and your 'dial up adaptor' at the very least,

If it's empty, reinstall them, click ADD, then choose 'client', then click ADD, in the left choose 'microsoft', in the right choose 'client for microsoft network'

then do the same for 'adaptor'

-----------
Restore your winsock dll files:
Do this in the 'safe mode'
reboot, immediately tap the F8 key, at the black windows startup menu, select 'safe mode' with your up and down arrow keys, press enter, after it loads up > >

Run the System File Checker
Go to Start / Run
Type sfc
Press Enter
Choose "Extract one file..."

Type wsock32.dll

Click Start, and where it says "Restore from"

type in
C:\windows\options\cabs

Where it says "Save file in"

Type
c:\windows\system

Press Enter.

--------------------

then do the exact same thing for winsock.dll, except save it to c:\windows

Make a note of any error messages, post back your progress

:)

I do have the Client for Microsoft Networks and dial-up adapter.... Am noticing now that the PC will not shut down all the way... always need to use the power button to shut off, when it reboots, it does NOT do a scan disk so it must get some way through the shut down process.... btw, computer shut down successfully from safe mode.... OK, completed items from your response but no improvement, not errors reported ... browsers just do nothing and very little data tranfer on dial up connection (3K in 8 minutes) email still works, just downloaded one email...... so still at same point... am noticing the pc is really slow and all memory is being used with the kernal processor stuck at 100% all the time....

Tgerbs,

On the one hand you have the broken internet connection but on the other there is the unkown component tapping out your pc's performance, before proceeding any further with the 'internet' issues, lets get a better picture of your machine and what's working behind the scenes,

Download the program Hijack This from here
Hijack This

It's very small, 150kb, so you could put it on a floppy if you need to, then run the program on the problem machine. Click on the 'scan' button, you will see a report about your machine appear, now click on the 'SAVE LOG' button, it's exactly where the 'scan' button was,

Save the file, notepad will open, before you close it, copy and paste that info into this forum and we'll analyze it, the log should begin with "Running Processes" and end with at least 016, just to make sure you get all of it in here,

There's nothing personal in it, it's all registry connections and startup process's,

Before going full tilt down the path of 'internet connection' we need to make sure there are no other underlying issues /trojan/spyware/etc that are also complicating this, and your having performance & shutdown hangups now,

So take it two steps back, check the Hijack log, then bring it back to your current issue's again,

:)

Tgerbs,
You have some spyware/adware that is affecting performance, the first thing to do is go back and run Hijack again, then select all the entries I have listed below, in the Hijack window (put a check next to them) when you've selected all the ones below, click on the 'FIX' button,

C:\PROGRAM FILES\TIMESINK\ADGATEWAY\TSADBOT.exe

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\CMEII\CMESYS.exe

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.sureseeker.com/search.htm

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.sureseeker.com/search.htm

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.sureseeker.com/search.htm

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TimeSink Ad Client] "C:\Program Files\TimeSink\AdGateway\TSADBOT.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CMESys] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\CMEII\CMESYS.exe"
--------------

After you finish that reboot your computer;

Now use your regedit to clean any leftovers,
Go to Start / Run / Regedit type

Navigate to the keys: click on the +sign for each successive folder till you come to the folder/key RUN, the one just under it will be RUN SERVICES, highlight them one at a time,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

In the right pane, delete any values pertaining to the string "Conducent" or "Timesink" or "Tsadbot.exe" .

-------

Navigate to the key, same way as above:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shareddlls

In the right pane, delete any values pertaining to the string contains "FlexAct" or "tsad.dll" or "vcpdll.dll" or "tsadbot.exe" or "Addon2VB.dll".

Delete the following registry keys if they exist: these keys will be in the 'left' pane and look like folders, but will have the name 'TimeSink' , if found delete them

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TimeSink,Inc.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TimeSink
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\TimeSink
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\TimeSink,Inc.

---------
For extra cleanup, use 'find' to search for all of these files, use the quotations to single them out fast, if found, delete them,

"FlexAct"
"Tsad.dll"
"Vcpdll.dll"
"Tsadbot.exe"
"Addon2VB.dll"

After you finish all the above, create a new Hijack log and post it back,

:)

Tgerbs,
Nicely done~!

The spyware is no longer a problem. Who is your ISP? That answer relates to the protocols one would expect to find in your TCP/IP, and are you saying that the 'only' protocols in your 'network' were Microsoft Client and a 'dialup adaptor' ?

And to crystallize your issue: your saying that you can connect with your ISP , and then read/send mail but you cannot connect with any other internet sites, a.k.a. surfing?

Do you receive the error message, "this page cannot be displayed?" or "action canceled?"

The reason for detail is because I would love to avoid sending you on wild goose chase reinstalling this and that network device, etc, and pin this down specifically.

Otherwise it will be to continue trying variations on the above network device issues,

Ok, this is important, I see that your using CONFIGSAFE, which is a worthy fail safe program capable of 'restoring' previous settings on your computer. In windows one can choose to restore a previous version of their registry by using Scanreg /restore , but your Configsafe will restore more configurations.

So, try it now. There are a couple ways to use it, one is while your in windows, open the software for CONFIGSAFE and click on the restore button, follow instructions,

The other way is from DOS, using their SOS emergency tool, for a non-bootable situation, it may seem easier to use the restore feature in windows but if you do this in the DOS mode, you will not have any compatibility issues/error messages for sure.

Hence:
To use it, boot to the command prompt,(start / shutdown / restart in ms dos) and switch to the CFGSAFE directory.

Type the following commands and hit enter after each:

cd\
cd cfgsafe
sos.exe

Run SOS.EXE, and follow the instructions on the screen. When you complete the restore process reboot your machine.

And test your connections.

One other thing, if for some reason you get error messages like 'bad command/file name' discontinue and post back,

The only other issue might be that CFGSAFE is not in c: but in c:\windows, if the above doesn't run then do this>

Type the following commands and hit enter after each from the C:\ prompt,

cd windows
cd cfgsafe
sos.exe

Run SOS.EXE, and follow the instructions on the screen. When it's finished, reboot your machine.

And test your connections.

:)

I get my internet from MCLEODUSA

I have many protocalls... Client for Microsoft Networks, Microsoft Family Logon, Dial-up Adapter, Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet Adapter, IBM Personal Commucications LLC2 Driver, TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP -> Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet Adapter(NC100)

I can send/receive emails, and I downloaded the latest virus files for Norton...

This PC had a high speed cable modem attached (still have the ethernet card in - don't need it now) and I have connected to work with it via some software (IBM thing)

well, I might have clobbered my computer now... I chose factory settings in sos menu and now windows will not come up, ran sos after booting from the startup disk and put back the latest snapshot....ok, back to previous state.... in configsafe, I only have snapshots that are before I upgraged to 98 SE and all dates are after I have had this problem.. so not sure if I should do this.. what do you recommend?

Your protocols look ok, but you still might need to reinstall them if there's no progress, ok for now,

"I only have snapshots that are before I upgraged to 98 SE and all dates are after I have had this problem"

You developed this problem way back when, and then upgraded to 98 to try and fix it. . ?

BTY, excellent recovery from the sos situation.

Ok, take a look at your IP configurations and lets see if it points to the problem,

2 things to check:

a)go to Start / Programs / Ms Dos Mode

That will pop up a DOS window, while your still in 'windows',

The prompt should be at C:\windows;
If it's not type,

cd windows

and hit enter,

From c:\windows
type the following exactly

ipconfig /all> c:\ipconfig.txt

(note the spaces, there's only 2)

Now go back to 'windows' and click start / find / ipconfig.txt , you can put that in quotations so it will only find it,

Post the whole thing back here,

---------

b) run winipcfg

In normal windows click on start / run / winipcfg <type

what adpator is listed in the tiny window?
Click on 'more information'

Do you have information for:
DNS SERVORS
IP ADDRESS
SUBNET MASK
DHCP
?

:)

Let me explain what direction this is headed. There are many, many more things to examine and try. I have no problem running through everything until your machine connects to the internet. I just want you to know that may take some time, or it may happen in a flash.

You won't be able use system.1st restore as a fix because it will point to the installation of win98's registry and you had the problem already by then.

From this point on there is a whole slew of successive matters to fix and analyze. I can do it in this post but if it's ever easier by email let me know,

Ok, begin:

A) run winipcfg

In normal windows click on start / run / winipcfg

Click on 'more infor', check that your DNS SERVERS are still not listed, if not, then click 'release all', then click on 'renew',

Reboot, go back to 'winipcfg' and click on 'more info', see if it now lists your DNS SERVERS, under 'hosts name'

You don't need to post back those numbers, just let me know they exist, because your ipconfig.txt does not show them,

Test your internet connection.

B) Check this too:
Start / run / regedit

Follow the pathe of this key>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

Navigate by clicking on the +sign for each successive folder till you come to Winsock2

1. Confirm that you have that key

2. Navigate to this sub key>
starting with Winsock2 folder, click it's +sign, then open +Parameters, then +Protocol_Catalogue9, then +Catalogue Entries,

3. you should see 5 or 6 folders, how many?
Click each folder one at a time, then look at the 'name' in the right pane, right click on that name (the icon) and select 'modify',

Now the 'edit binary value' window pops up,
Look all the way to the right of the numbers for a windows pathe, it will look like this,

C:\windows\system\msafd.dll

All I need is the name of the dll file at the end, do this procedure for all, and collect the names of the dll files for all the catalogue entries ,the pathe in the 'edit binary value' window will not appear horizontally, it will be cramped vertically,

Take your time, no rush, don't make any other adjustments, then close regedit,

Rather than load you down, with more steps, it would be better, to proceed one thing at a time, so after your acknowledgement on the DNS and the Winsock2 key info, I'll give you the next procedure,

:)

for a) hit more info, still no DNS Servers, I hit the release all then renew all and get this error "32: Renewing adapter"

b)all the way downinto the last folder I see 6 numbered (11 zeros) and 1-6 each numbered folder has two items in the right pane, a default which has no entry and a packedCatalogItem which are listed below
#1 = c:\windows\system\mswsosp.dll
#2 = c:\windows\system\msafddll.l (null value after the mfafddll the the extra l)
#3 and #4 are the same as #2
#5 = c:\windows\system\rsvpsp.dll
#6 = #5

I have no problem documenting all this in the forum or doing it via email...

Ok, good,

Go to Start / Settings / Control Panel / Network

Select TCP/IP -DIAL UP ADAPTOR,
click Properties.

CHECK THAT "OBTAIN AN IP ADRESS AUTOMATICALLY" is checked...click ok,
-----------

Msafd.dll is critical for winsock2 and your version is rendered nonfunctional, restore it the same way you did for wsock32.dll,

Run the System File Checker
Go to Start / Run
Type sfc
Press Enter
Choose "Extract one file..."

Type msafd.dll
Click Start, and where it says "Restore from"
type in
C:\windows\options\cabs

Where it says "Save file in"
Type
c:\windows\system
Press Enter.

If you get a message, "this file already exists, do you want to overwrite?" say YES,

Reboot and test,
Post back any error messages you may get from using SFC,

----------

Ping Test:
Open a DOS prompt, click start / programs / ms dos prompt

type and hit enter:
ping yahoo.com

A lot of lines will float by, but the important one is,

do you get 4 packets sent, 4 packets received? or a timeout?

then type,
ping 66.218.71.114

4 packets sent, 4 packets received?

------------

and test this too,
type; ping 127.0.0.1

and hit enter,

A successful response will say "4 packets sent, 4 packets received"
------------

Finally;

use the tracert command,
type and hit enter after this command,

tracert 66.218.71.114

How far does it get? You don't have to copy everything, just the number of lines it completes, key words like: failed, complete, unkown host, etc,
------------------------

Another simple thing you can check is this:

While online with your pc, type this address in your address bar and try to connect to it,

https://amazon.com :443

http://66.218.71.114

ooops, did exactly what I said I wouldn't, way too much info,

:)

the obtain ip address was ok, reloaded the dll ok, no errors... rebooted and tested internet ... still the same, got emails but no connection on the browsers... ping tests where all successful, all 4 packets were returned with no time out or packet loss... the tracert took 8 hops and finally got to yahoo.com, no errors only a few ip addresses like unknown.Level3.net [4.68.112.189]... trying to type the port number on the browser had the same effect.. browser finds the site, even said I was being redirected to a different site, but then sat there and no data was transfered....

Hi,
Your computer is connecting to the internet successfully, your DUN (dial up networking), TCP/IP protocols, & winsock2 / winsock dll's, are all ok,

The problem is with the browser or its settings;

During your research have you ever modified Interent Explorer or reinstalled, or repaired it?

a) right click 'internet explorer' the desktop icon, choose 'properties', then 'connections' , make sure 'never dial a connection' is checked, if you had to make a change, test your connection, if not >

b) Click Start / Settings / Control Panel, and double-click Add/Remove Programs.

From the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, click Add/Remove, click 'Repair the current installation of Internet Explorer', and then click OK.

If you cannot find it there,

Click Start / Run.
In the Open box, copy and paste the following command exactly , then click OK:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.exe" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

Test connections,

:)
