Dear...
In the process of cleaning up my daughter's computer I noticed that I am unable to access the internet options, not from the control panel, not from internet explorer's (5.0) tool menu, not by clicking on inetcpl.cpl. I have run AVG6.0, Adaware6, and Trendmicro's online virus scanner. Still the internet options will not open. What happens is that I get a flash on my screen, as if the window is opening for a millisecond, and that's it. All my other cpl files open when I click on them. I have also used several cleanup utilities. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Try doing an IE repair. From device manager> add/remove programs> select IE, you will be given choices. Choose repair installation. You could also urgrade to IE6. That should repair anything too. No reason for you to not use IE6 is there?

John, If you have Spybot Search & Destroy installed follow the instructions at the link below to correct your problem.

Hi OtheHill/Tufenuf,
I have no option for repairing Internet Explorer. I've heard people speak of this before, but I have never been able to find it. I think I'll try reinstalling windows 98. If that doesn't do it I'll consider upgrading to Internet Explorer 6.
I don't have SpyBot, at least I don't think I have. This is my daughter's computer so God only knows what she and her husband have done to it.
Thank you both for you suggestions.

type MSinfo32 into the Run Box, select Tools from the Menu bar and select the first item in the drop down menu - Repair Internet Explorer Tool - too easy.

Hi melee5,
My tool menu doesn't list an entry for repairing internet explorer. I have a suspicion that not all versions of windows 98se contain this option. Since I posted last I decided to go ahead and reinstall windows. This corrected the problem, albeit the hard way. Thank you for your suggestion. I had forgotten about msinfo32 and am glad to be reminded of it and its usefulness.

For future reference. Many programs offer a repair option. Unfortunately it won't show until you select to remove the program. If the repair option is available, it will show up then. If not you can still cancel the removal. This has nothing to do with WIn98 either. IE is a independent program that runs under windows.

Just for reference:

When internet explorer 5.5 and below doesn't have the 'repair' option in add/remove programs, try it using a command:

Click Start / Run.
In the Open box, copy and paste this command, then click OK:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.exe" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

For Internet Explorer 6.0:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.exe" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

:)

Thanks StarWaves. I'll tuck that little gem away.
