Can you reinstall Windows without losing all your data on your harddrive? I'm having problems with different files. First, mmsystem.dll was causing problems, someone on Computing.Net told me to delete it so I did. That helped a little, but created a new problem. Now the PC says "The winmm.dll file cannot start, check the file to determine the problem". Not sure what I can do? I don't want to have to reformat and lose everything as I don't have any easy way to backup other than 1.44mb at a time!!! I'm running Win98SE. Are there any utilies out there that can fix my windows files? HELP - Please

Have your Win 98 cd handy, click start, run, type SFC click OK, Check system files and extract them off cd to replace changed or deleted files. Make back up just in case as it can be restored also. If you don't want to do it this way, just reinstall Windows 98 over itself by putting in the CD and running set up, then follow any on screen instructions. Either way should repair windows for you with out the loss of all data.

Backup registry now , using this method .
Then you can go back 14 days , once you have been using it 14 days . In the meantime , it tells you how to go back to 4 days ago .

Rich,
I ran "SFC" and that found a couple errors and fixed them but didn't fix the problem I was having. So I then re-installed Windows over itself and THAT FIXED IT!!!
Juat wanted to say thank you for your help.
