Can someone tell me how to make a back up copy of Win98 on my hard drive?I'm told if you have to re install windows its best to have a backup on the hd so you don't have to pull out the cd when it ask for certain files.I'm not familiar with dos but I guess that's where I go to do this??????? Any help? Thank you

Ok, it's not a backup but a copy of the win98 install files. Copy the Win98 folder from the CD to the hard drive. That's it.

If you're interested, there is a modification to the Registry that can be made to direct Windows to the new location instead of the CD.

Thank you Fred for your help.I thought that's all you do too, but someone told me that's wrong and I need to do something at dos so when it ask for a file during re installing of Windows it knows right where to find it and won't ask for the disc.

Yes, that's the Registry modification. If you feel up to it the location is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\SETUP\SOURCEPATH Change the 'sourcepath' in the right panel from the CD location (possibly d:\win98) to the location where you copied it to on the hard drive (possibly c:\win98). Modifying the registry is somewhat dangerous so you should be sure that you know what you're doing before you start.

It's not really necessary to make that change. Instead of doing that you could just redirect the input (Browse) when it asks for the CD.

You're welcome Heather. Changing the registry really isn't that big a deal. If you change your mind check back and someone can give you step by step instructions.

Fred is right.changing the registry is no big deal.I have changed a lot of things in my registry to get better performance. All you have to do is navigate to start/run and type regedit.exe and do the steps given by Fred.

if you run an install from the win98 folder copied to your hard disk, then future hunting by windows for those files will be directed to that folder , the reg. change is done by install. Works for win95 as well if you copy win95 folder from CD to harddrive.
