I know this might be a dumb question but I'd like to know if it's possible to physically connect a pc to a mac and then transfer multimedia files from pc to mac. I want burn the files onto a cdr from the mac.
Merry Christmas everyone.

Good question. I've heard of this and just did a check but could not find any shareware that allows large files. I assume you do not want to go and buy software, but it is out there. Maybe someone knows of some freeware. It looks pretty easy, just use the two machines' ethernet ports.

Hey John. I ran out to buy a LAN/ethernet cross cable to hook up the MAc and PC. When I tried to install the LAN cable through W98's "direct cable connection". There were options for serial and parallel cable connection only but nothing for LAN. Where did I go wrong or is it impossible to connect through LAN with W98? I wasn't aware of any softwares out there that helps in this regard. Moreover, I am unfamiliar with Mac and have no idea how to set up the Mac make the transfer. Any help from anyone out there would be much appreciated.

G'day,
This should be possible using a comms program. It's not a network connection, but if both machines are running something like procomm, telix or hyperterminal, then transfer between the serial ports should be possible.
One point you need to consider is that the MAC uses RS422 for its serial and LAN (Appletalk??) connections. A converter may be required. The physical medium may be your problem for the network connection to,unless one of the machines converts to the other's physical medium. The software side should be OK provided they both use the same protocol (ie ethernet).
Apple machines come with a program called Apple File Exchange, but I think this may only apply to floppy disks.
Good luck.elric

G'day,
Just another thing. The direct cable connection on the PC is just that.I believe it refers to serial (ie COM1,2 etc) or parallel connections (ie printer port LPT1 etc), but not LAN.
I think you would have to get a network card for the PC. With this in mind it might be prudent for you to step back a bit and consider your options.
This way if you decide to go the network route, you can plan to get cards that suit both machines.
Afraid I can't tell you that because I don't know, but I'm sure someone on this board may well do. Have you looked into the howtos and the install guides??
good luck,elric

G'day,
Just come across your message in the MAC forum (helpfull bunch aren't they?)I posted this message:
G'day,
(See also message 133785 on the WIN9x notice board). The Direct Connection option in windows only uses serial (COM1..) or parallel (LPT1...) ports. Hence your ethernet cable will not work - what did you plug it into?? If it was a network card, then you should be able to set up a network connection with the MAC if it has a network card. I believe the later MACs have an Ethertalk protocol built in. Some have expansion slots where ethernet cards can be inserted.
So, your problem is trying to use the Direct Cable option- the software for the client/ server method will not run on the MAC anyway.
It appears to be a pseudo network anyway.
The MAC also has a network protocol on RS422 called Appletalk but I've no idea how you would link a PC with it.
The slow option, of course, is to use a comms program on each machine and connect them together with a null modem cable (perhaps even modem) but you would have to be aware of the RS422 connection with the MAC.You could then set one of them up as a simple BBS and then upload/ download as required. You would have to convert any machine specific files of course, but I think the MAC is better at this (File Exchange??) There is also the option of MAC or Windows emulators, but I have no idea what is out there on the market.
To clear up any confusion that you might have concerning the DCC visit this really useful site:

www.macwindows.com might be able to help too.
good luck,
Elric
