Can not run scan disk or defrag on my compaq???

Well I bought a brand new compaq athalon 750, last night after having this pc for about a month it would shutdown, i tried running defrag on the pc it ran but would never get back 0% I tried scan disk and it said it couldn't because something is writting to the hard drive? Has anyone come across this problem?

I've seen it happen, it's normally just TSRs.
Boot in safe mode and run it from there

Is it safe to run a defrag on a brand new system? I was under the impression that we should wait on this until we have used it for a while. As there is really nothing to sort out.
I am honestly unsure and look forward to hearing.

Go with sugestion # 2. Do a CTR-ALT-DEL and end all programs except Systray and explorer, stop you screen saver and then run defrag.

You can run defrag any time you want. It does not matter and actually doing it about once a week is a good idea...

I had similar troubles with compaq, would never finish a defrag and restart scandisks over and over. I did a few things, now no trouble: More ram. Made a customized swap file (that's what I think did it, the swap file kept resizing and rewriting so disk kept being used). Unchecked a lot of startup items.
