It seems this file on this p2 computer will not let me defrag. Can anyone tell me what C:\windows\HH.exe is? I'm wondering if it could be a virus or maybe a compressed file. When i run the virus scan manually it finds 21 files that it could not scan. There are two other files that come up as possible corruptable files, and they are-C:\windows\sndvol32.exe and C:\windows\_detmp.8 Don't know what any of these files are, or what they may be used for. Unable to defrag this computer in safe mode. It will reach 10% to 16% and then it says error on "c" drive, -run scan disk. Finally got scan disk to do a full scan but it still won't defrag. I'm thinking of formatting the computer and start over but only if i have too...

Boot to dos standalone and try
scandisk c: /surface
It will thoroughly check your hard drive for bad sectors. Be aware that it can take hours. You might consider running it over night.

Try:
1. Emptying your browser cache
2. Deleting all files and folders in \Windows\Temp
3. Deleting all files in \Windows\Applog (hidden directory)
4. Empty the recycle bin
5. Scandisk (with auto FIX off, so you can see any errors found before scandisk "tries" to fix them)
6. Defrag

HH.exe is HTML help. I have it on mine too with no problems.
There's an article here but I don't think it applies to your problem:

Art,
C:\windows\HH.exe is an HTML help viewer.

This computer was used to do work at home and has an AS400 program on it. The person who used the computer has passed away and her husband would like to use it. It is running very slow, tried to defrag it after cleaning out the temp files and it just won't happen. Did get the scan disk to work, took over 3 hours to complete, but something is stopping the defrag. Can't figure out what the 21 files are that the virus scan could not check.... It seems that something is hidden away on this computer and doesn't want anything to check it... The computer has Win 98 SE on it...

As far as the file sndvol32.exe is concerned you can retrieve a new copy by typing sfc in the Run box and using the "extract a file" feature, using the W98SE CD. Be careful using the actual sfc file checker option because it can get it wrong - that file is fine though.
The file _detmp.8 is not on my Win98SE and there is no mention of it in Google. It could, I suppose, be for some program or other but I'm tempted to say delete it - at least to the bin for a while.
I am beginning to wonder if your HD might be failing, but let's think in other directions first.

I will tackle this computer again saturday morning and try the suggestions offered and see how i make out. I will post the results, good or bad.....

Just thinking here. Did you uninstall the AS400 program? If not, try it. Also why not uninstall the anti-virus program for now. If there are quarantined files it will tell you they are there and ask if you want them deleted. Say yes. You can set up the anti-virus again when you are finished everything. You can also download this file on a one month trial. I have used it and it did wonders for me on a friends computer. Try it and then try defragging again in safe mode. Here's the url

Hope this helps.

Found two anti virus programs installed on the computer. One of them [norton] was deleted instead of uninstalled.Once i get this straightened out i think i'll be able to run the defrag program. Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions... Art
