Simple. Unplug the old one, plug in the new one, and install the software that's included. Follow the instructions that are included with a new card, and read the documentation that came with your computer.

One thing to watch for, follow safety precautions and prevent static electricity any time you remove the computer case cover.

If your computer has "Onboard" or "Integrated" crap, that means you don't have a real sound card to pull. So you have to disable the Onboard, which can be simple or complicated depending on the specific computer.

Best Luck,
Bob

Bob, I also need to know is it the same as the video card. And what if the pci slot is in the back? Do i just open it put the card in, and install the card. Or do I have to open the computer. On your opinion, if it is just better to get it done by a computer store should I just do that or I can do it. Thanks

Hi again

Somebody probably can install a PCI sound card in a COMPAQ PRESARIO 5000T.

Your system is having some problems.

The problem really hasn't really been resolved - and accordingly, doing anything else is a toss of the coin.

So the answer would be Maybe / Maybe not.

You'll have to pull the cover off the computer, which is rather simple. There aren't any PCI slots on the outside of a computer.

You should be able to find printed instructions for installing/removing PCI cards either at the computer maker's website, in material that came with your computer, or with the new sound card.

The graphics card and sound card are two different things.

Based on the age of your computer (566mhz) it's probably not worth taking to a shop. There's really no reason not to try it yourself, and if you take it to a shop they won't show you what they did - you'll be stuck taking it in next time too. May as well learn to do the simple things yourself.

It would be best if you had a friend who's done something on a computer before. It's really only a five-minute job with another five minutes to install the software.

Have you bought a new sound card yet? Do you know what kind of sound your system currently has?

I didn't realize there were other ongoing problems. It actually seems more serious than just a sound card. Perhaps a motherboard problem or something wrong with the BIOS. Perhaps multiple problems...

I recommend determining if the shutdown-startup problem can be fixed first. It may not be worth investing in new hardware for a computer with serious underlying defects.

Best Luck,
Bob

Hi

Its probably not all that serious a problem. It only appears to be a big problem as Computerguy is trying out a few different ideas, but any feedback is limited to -it didn't work or None...

Bobthearch you've higlighted disabling onboard crap. This is probably the crux of any difficulty that Computerguy is experiencing. {Just a guess OK]

Evidently the sound went once, but it stopped working at some point.

Yeah, I'd like to hear exactly what kind of sound he currently has. If it's a PCI card, it may simply need replacing. If it's Onboard, there may be underlying motherboard or BIOS problems.

Computerguy, I bought a used IBM 400mhz computer that had Onboard sound. For less than $20 I added a real sound card and couldn't believe the improvement! It was tricky to disable the Onboard stuff first, and that's not done the same way on every computer.

Best Luck,
Bob

It is onboard and yes I have been taking as much as advice as needed. I got it to go into safe mode. But that sound has still been giving me problems. I am not sure what to do. I have seriously tried everything. The computer works great. I think it is the sound. The safe mode thing was pure stupidity. And I was just seeing if any good games were out. But yeah if you think it'll be the sound card. I'll try I am very willing to try anything. And how would I get the cover off. And thanks everyone. I AM ALWAYS READY FOR IDEAS!!!

Hi again

Thanks to Bobthearch for mentioning the posibility of "onboard"

Take note of Response #5 in URL below. beck mentions some may not have amplified sound as well.

Your search for your computer in HP.

HP seach key 5000T PRESARIO

Drivers and Downloads for 5000T

ESS Allegro PCI Audio (WDM) This Device was not listed?????? So perhaps they supplied slightly diferent machines to your region. Hmm I wonder if one for a slightly different compaq would do the trick.

Maybe that is what a SOUNDMAX is: I'd try updating using one of them. The only thing there are 3 different drivers listed.
