Hi,
I was reading a May 9, 1999 response on the "Win 9x Support Forum" to a question about removing unwanted icons from the system tray in Windows 98. I am running a program called "WinVNC" and it insists on placing an icon in the system tray area (lower-right-hand side of the screen, by the clock) when it runs. I want this program to run when the PC boots up, so I have it placed in the "Windows/Start Menu/Programs/StartUp" folder. However, I do not want the icon placed anywhere on the screen. Or for that matter, I don't want any evidence the program is running unless you do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete. In the past I have used "TraySaver" and several others to accomplish this task, but these programs merely hide the icon in their area, and in turn create an icon for themselves. This does not accomplish what I want to do. I want to hide it so there is absolutely no indication the program is running (except for Ctrl-Alt-Delete, of course). Thank you in advance.

The answer is YES! I just saw a downloadable program on ZDNET that allows you to hide the system tray icons. You might have to pay a small fee to buy the program, like $10, not sure. But goto
http://www.zdnet.com
Then click on download files
In the search box, enter the search terms "system tray" and "hide"
You should be able to locate the little program that will do this.

Why not use regedit or msconfig to stop systray from booting altogether. That way you get no icons showing at all!

Problem is, if there is anyone smart enough to advise you how to hide things, there are also people smart emough to retrieve them from their hiding place.

VNC Virtual Network Computing
Are you aware that it is illegal to monitor without letting the person or persons be aware that they are being monitored. If you are a sysadmin person you could be setting yourself up for a fall. We use this freeware at the co where I work and its great because it lets the geeks fix things remotely, they just take over your computer from their location. It also slows down your drive noticeably, when doing CAD or any graphics, we shut VNC down. So in W98, just check Performance in System properties, and you are aware "something" is dragging down your performance.
