Can i break password of windows

It is one of most frequent problem i face in institue.And for this we have to format Harddsik.Few days back "w" helped me in this forum for breaking password of IE through regedit.exe file.So it gave me a direction.Now How can we break the password of Windows.
What I have understood to solve this problem is that copy the regedit.exe file of infected system through DOS.Rename it and then copy to another system and then run it.and make changes and again rename it and copy to infected system.Till here I have done But I was unable to locate the location where password key was placed and i had to delete.I mean what i have to change in regedit.exe.If any one can tell me or give me other option which can recover without reinsatlling windows.

what version win are u talking about?search the drive for .pwl files,the password type files,and delete the .pwl files.reboot

I am talking about Win 98 and XP.Ok thanks for telling about PWL files but i think regedit.exe can also do that .Can anyone tell me .

98 and xp are totally different when it comes to passwords.

there are utilities that catch cached passwords in pwls. they are easily available on kazaa etc.
