I WANT to be disconnected while using the internet. I use a dial-up ISP and I have call-waiting. I have missed many important phone calls because of call-waiting (apparently the other person's line just rings, and rings). How do I set my dial-up connection so that, when I'm on-line, an incoming call will knock me off-line (aka disconnect me from my ISP)?

Open your dial-up connection, as if you were going to go online. Click on "Dial Properties". Uncheck the box next to "This location has call waiting, to diable it, dial:". Genrealy the code to diable it is *70, which is probably what is in the box on your systen.
A better solution is to get Call Forwarding, Busy, Don't Answer and one of the programs that alert you to the fact that you have an incomming call. Prodigy has a nice one that will allow you 3 different options, one being to answer the call.

it is not set up to disable call waiting. If it were the phone would ring busy.
The problem is when the beep goes down the line the computer ignores its.
solution: set the timeout that the modem waits after lose of carrier signal(that screeching noise you hear when you pickup the reciever when the modem is connected) before disconnecting. Currently it is set to be larger then the beep so it doesn't disconnect. You want it to be shorter. Here are the steps.
goto control panel->modems-> select your modem->properties->connections->advanced. In the extra settings box add the following to the end of whatever is there:
S10=2
this sets register 10, which is the above mentioned timout to a value of 2 tenths a second. If that doesn't work try 1. Test it by arranging for someone to call you while you are connected. Let us know how it goes.The program Crusader mentions is a good alternative because it won't immidatly drop the connection but tell you someone is calling. Your ISP or phone company may offer it.

CallWave is a good piece of software (and free). It stays up on the screen and when a call comes, it "rings" and the person on the other end is instructed to leave a message. Once they do, you will hear the message through your computer speakers, then you can call them back. The only cost is about $1.00 (where I live) through your phone company for "Busy Call Transfer". Have used it for over a year and I love it!!!!

get another phone line!
if this is happenend then most likely the phone service to your area is crappy. Dont ever reduce the lost carrier disconnect time like one of the previous posts.

Why? It works. What do you mean phone service is crappy? I did this all the time when I only had one line. Why should I never ever reduce it? Will my computer explode?
PS: extra phone lines cost ~$30 CAN that is a large expense some people can't justify
