All I want to do is go to the C:\ prompt when I turn on my computer. I don't want to start Windows in regular or safe mode or any mode. How do I get my computer to start the c:\ prompt?

Open up the c:\msdos.sys file with notepad. Change the 'bootgui=1' line to 'bootgui=0'.

You might have to remove the 'read only' attribute to save the file.

G'Day RRO, if I remember my Dos right you can just add the word 'command' in the last line of your Autoexec.bat. If you don't have one just create one in notepad with just that single word.

And to continue to Windows when desired just type 'win' at the prompt.

Thank you all for the suggestions however, I guess what I'm asking is, when I turn on the computer, it automatically tries to load Windows.

At what point do I press the magic buttons (what ever they are) to stop the OS load process and have the c:\ prompt come up?

F8 or CTRL will bring up the Windows 98 Startup Menu where you can choose Command Prompt Only.

Or, in windows, Start Run type in msconfig. Click on Advanced (near the bottom right) and place a check mark in the box for Enable Startup Menu.

To add just a little bit. Holding down the ctrl key will get the startup menu on some systems, or you can continually tap the F8 key during the boot.

If the F8 or Ctrl keys don't work, it's probably because there is a

BootKeys=0

entry in msdos.sys.

Hi, If I remember correctly Ronnie has the best solution. Research CHOICE for Autoexec.Bat. You should be able to add an option to go to Windoze or DOS. That is if Ronnie's suggestion works.

Good Luck, Jim
