I run W98 and IE 6.0 and am suddenly unable to use my browser to get to any websites. I can use IE to open graphics on my PC, yet if I type a web address or select a favourite, it freezes. I then have to C+A+D and end task on IE. Then I notice a task running (DW15) which I never saw before. After searching my hard drive, I found a DW.log file and it's most recent entries say: IE fails in wininet.dll. When IE 6 freezes, it also references wininet.dll in the error message.
If I try to use my browser within AOL, I get a WAOL illegal operation, also referencing wininet.dll, and I am shut down. Does anyone here know what this file may mean, and what I might do to get my browser functioning? I have tried the IE repair tool, and that has not helped.

Hi Lisa,
Try using sfc to extract the wininet.dll file from the win98 cd. Go to Start > Run, type sfc. Select "Extract One File..etc" then type in wininet.dll. The rest is pretty well self-explanatory. Hope this helps.

Science is Cool!
======================================

I am using Win98FE with IE5.5sp2.
When I do a Find on wininet.dll I find one file in the C:\Windows\System folder.
When I right click on the .dll and select Properties, Version I can clearly see that the version matches my version of IE5.5 so I can safely assume that it was either installed by or modified when I upgraded from IE5.1sp2 to IE5.5sp2.My point is, extracting a copy of the file from your Win988 CD will only provide you with the .dll version that is for IE4 and will do you no good.
Try using Find to see if the .dll exists on your PC and if it does, check the version and it's location.
If the version matches IE6 and is in C:\Windows\System folder then go to:
Start, Run and type in:
"regsvr32 wininet.dll" without the quotes and hit OK to register the .dll
You will get a confirmation of it being registered. If you do not have the correct version then perhaps someone can email it to you. Mine is about 476kb in size but is for IE5.5sp2.
To see which version you should have go to IE, Help, About and you will see the version number there.
HTH

This MS Article specifies IE up to version 5 but suggests you need more disk space to resolve the problem.
This Article has the IE6 version of the .dll and the instructions to install it.
I had seen another article from Computing.net that suggests that you need to rid your machine of the Sircam virus.

a few days ago my IE6 froze up while browsing a site (suggested by CNET!) . When I C+A+D I saw something called DW15 . SO I shut it down and that shutdown IE too.
Went back to the site and on the same exact part of the site it made IE freeze again.
I don't know what it is but it could be a trojan if it is not part of IE??
this is my DW.log (may be DW is not related to DW15??)
By the way I don't have Office 10, I don't know why it is reporting that. But I have MS Works.
