Thanks

OK, I am scratching my brain to go WAY back.
I think you needed to have Win 3.1 on the computer to use an UPGRADE version of 95.
This sounds like it could be the problem.
Also, realize, there were several versions of 95. Version A, B and about 3 different OEM versions. The OEM versions were not available to the general public, and only came with "new" computers. Do you know which version you are using? You will need to have the FULL version to install on a computer which has no operating system on it.

Hello blaklbl6, cynic957, Jim C, hi everyone
The provided information may be a little bit cryptic, but there is no need to be cynical...
It's nice to see you popping in here with the "Old" Windows 9x forum, Jim C. :-)

Don't have to scratch as hard as you. :-)
No, it's not necessary to have Win 3.1 installed. With the Upgrade version of Windows 95, you can easily pull the setup a leg. ;-)
All you need to do is have the first setup disk of Windows 3.1 or Windows 3.11 at hand.
When setup starts nagging about not being able to find win.com or one of it's components, you put the first setup disk in drive A: and redirect to A:\ :-)blaklbl6,
The Windows 95 CD-ROM isn't bootable, so that isn't going to work. :-(
What you'll need is a Windows 95 bootdisk.
You can download one from http://www.bootdisk.com.Safe the downloaded file from http://www.bootdisk.com to your desktop, and place a fresh/blank floppy in to drive A:, double-click on the downloaded file to extract the contents to the floppy.
Boot the trouble-computer with the newly created bootdisk, and choose With CDROM support. Pay close attention to the Drive letter being assigned to your CD-ROM drive. If your computer boots from the bootdisk, when it's done it should read: A:>_
From there see if there is format.com on the disk by typing: dir format.com[Enter]key. If it's there it should read some thing like, 1 file(s) found.
If that's the case type in:
format c: /s[Enter]key, when that's done switch to the CD-ROM drive by typing in:
E:[Enter]key followed by
setup[Enter]key and you should be off.Note: Where it reads E: you'll need to replace it for the drive letter assigned to the CD-ROM drive on boot.
Hope this helps, keep us posted.

Hello blaklbl6, cynic957, Jim C, beansoup, hi everyone
beansoup,
With the Full version of Windows 95 he/she won't be needing the first setup disk of Windows 3.1 or Windows 3.11.
I cannot answer your question. Sorry.
But it's my believe that you don't "own" the software, despite of paying for it. :-/
You paid for the M$ License Agreement and the Terms of Use, and the disks of course.
Not for the ownership of the software package. Otherwise why isn't one allowed to de-compile the software, modify the software to ones needs, and re-compile it?Just a thought...
It's just like renting a car. You pay Rent-x-Cxr a amount of money and sign a contract, they provide you the key, the car etc., but that doesn't make you the owner of that particular car.
The contract states that you aren't allowed to strip down the car and rebuild it to meet your needs, i.e. you aren't allowed to take out the custom engine and put a other one in (a side from everything else that needs to be replaced) to make it a StreetRod.Back to the topic...
With my previous post, I merely pointed out that you can safe yourself the hustle of first installing MS-DOS version 5.0 or higher. And than install Windows 3.xx, to finally be able to upgrade to Windows 95.Best Regards,
The Count

Hi y'all,
Count thanks for the extensive reply..I didn't want to strip the rentall car or change anything in the car, I just wanted to loan it to someone...LOL
I see what you mean, tho'....
I did make a mistake in my previous post..I meant upgrade, not full version..when I referred to the first 3.1 floppy disk....Carry on:-)

Hello blaklbl6, cynic957, Jim C, beansoup, hi everyone
Sorry for stealing your thread once more blaklbl6.
beansoup,
"...loan it to someone..."
Wouldn't that also be against the contract, terms of use? :-/And I made a mistake in my previous post as well, "...,modify the software to ones needs,..." should have been:
modify the source to ones needs"Carry on" at your convenience
Yes, Sir. But not tonight, I'm going to bunk up shortly, Sir. :-DBest Regards,
The Count
