Comment:

my pc has taken ages to start up for about a year now so having installed this app i thought it might help.

here is the question can or how do i remove items from the boot log (so as to bypass the offending item)-
"16:01:45 34.72 Initing esdi_506.pdr"

the following is a cut and paste from a small section of the log.

as you can see it hangs for 34.72 seconds during boot sequence

any help would be most grateful

16:01:42 0.06 Init Success hsflop.pdr
16:01:42 2.39 Initing dmx3191.mpd
16:01:44 0.00 Init Success dmx3191.mpd
16:01:44 0.67 Initing esdi_506.pdr

Extract a fresh copy of esdi_506.pdr from your installation package see if it corrects the problem.

Let's say your CDRom is drive X (edit the line of set cd_drive=X below accordingly).

::---batch for win98--------
set cd_drive=X
c:
cd %winbootdir%
cd .\system\iosubsys
ren esdi_506.pdr esdi_506.old
extract /a %cd_drive%:\win98\win98_22.cab esdi_506.pdr
set cd_drive=
::---------------------------

or

::---batch for win95--------
set cd_drive=X
c:
cd %winbootdir%
cd .\system\iosubsys
ren esdi_506.pdr esdi_506.old
extract /a %cd_drive%:\win95\win95_02.cab esdi_506.pdr
set cd_drive=
::---------------------------

I'm guessing you have a VIA chipset since I see VIAGART.
So what you might want to do is to install VIA hard drive controller drivers.
