not yet. I have read on the forums that it is not a windows 98 file. Deleting it seemed to be the easy soluton. I havent tried yet i'm still surfing forums.

No harm in renaming it and rebooting to see what happens. Worst case you have to then boot from a startup diskette and rename it back.

Rebuild the Master Boot record by booting to a startup disk and typing "fdisk /mbr".

Wrong on all counts. Nothing in the MBR points to either Win 98 or XP for booting. The MBR only looks for the ACTIVE partition and its boot sector to boot from. It is the boot sector that determines what is going to boot by looking for NTLDR or IO and MSDOS.sys. Renaming or deleting the boot.ini file will leave you with a system that will, at best, boot to XP only, at worst not boot at all. Editing the boot.ini file to remove the XP entry would still leave you with using the XP boot files - NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM and boot.ini and because you are booting Win98, bootsect.dos.

A simpler solution would be to

sys a: c:

from a Win98 boot floppy. Providing your Win98 was installed on the C: drive originally.
