Terrell,

You will need to extract win.cnf off the CD and rename it in your windows folder.

Can you start in safe mode by pressing F8 during the bootup?
Reboot and keep pressing until you get a menu and select Safe Mode.

It won't start in safe mode. It keep telling me that those 2 files are corrupt and missing win.com. Will I be able to possibably start in safe mode once I copy that win.cnf file to a floppy? and how do I rename it? (By right clicking or "save as") once I find it on cd? and I'm renaming it "win.com" I presume!! if I am correct, how do I copy from the floppy to the hard drive or system in DOS? what do I type in to make that happend?

Terrell,

Of course you can't start in Safe-Mode.
No win.com

You will need to extract the file using your start-up disk. Sounds like yours is bad. Go to another computer using windows98 and create a new start up disk.
Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs Click the StartUp Disk Tab and click create Disk.

Insert the disk in the other computer and it should take you to the StartUp Menu.

See if that will get you to the menu.

Post Back.

Terrell,

When the menu appears chose start computer with CD-ROM support.
Insert your CD.
At the A:> TYPE:
extract d:\win98_25.cab win.cnf /l c:\windows\

This will extract the win.cnf

Now go to the a: prompt and rename win.cnf win.com

a:ren c:\windows\win.cnf c:\windows\win.com

Terrell,

The start-disk nor the bootdisk will have the file you need. The start-up disk will allow you to extract the file you need from the CD-ROM. The file must be extracted.
You must use the start-up disk as it will allow the extract command.
Use either start-up disk. I thought you said the first disk would give you the same error is why I wanted you to make another using a different computer.

Terrell,

You could extract it to a floppy on the computer you are using at work using SFC (system file checker). Then on the computer at home from the A: prompt deleted C:\windows\win.ini
Rename the file on the floppy win.ini
Copy it to C:\windows.
Never done it that way but don't know why that would not work.

Terrell,

Yes you can do it that way as I just did.
After extracting win.cnf to a floppy I restarted to Dos and deleted win.ini.
I then renamed win.cnf on the floppy to win.ini.
A:>copy a:win.ini c:windows
Rebooted no probs.

I found the Win.cnf file in a zipped file on the win98 cd and I copied it onto a floppy disk. Now correct me if I'm wrong, I should go and load this onto my computer on the c:drive and then rename it once loaded to win.com????? also if I can get to the page where it askes me to boot/load or whatever with CD ROM support, should I put in the WIN98CD when i'm trying to boot/startup? Because I did git there once before last night when all this happeneed but I didn't insert the win98 CD!!! So should I try all that again before renaming/replacing this file to see if the program/computer takes the needed files off of the CD disc itself???? Sorry for not mentioning that piece of info!!

Terrell,

Rename it on the floppy.
Right click Rename and name it win.com
Go Home
Put your BOOTDISK in and when it gets to the A: prompt type
a:\>copy a:win.com c:windows
leaving a space between copy and a and com and c:

Use the boot disk you downloaded today to get to the A:\> prompt.

Terrell,

It should ask, if it is there to overwrite the file.
You can check if the file exist in windows.
At the A:\> type c: then enter.
At the C:\> type cd windows then enter
At C:\windows> type dir/p
It should be located towards the top.
Select any key to view more files if it is not until you get back to the prompt.
If it is there:
Go back to C:\windows> and type del win.com
This will deleted the file.

2. Go Home
3. Insert Boot Disk you got today.
4. Boot the computer.
5. Once at the a:\> remove the boot disk and insert the floppy with win.com
5. At the a:\> Type del c:windows\win.com
6. At the a:\> Type copy a:win.com c:windows
7. Remove floppy
8. Reboot the computer

Copy and Paste this to notepad or word and take it home with you.

After telling them to restore their system files from the boot-disk and having them try to go to safe-mode, as I would normally not have done seeing the problem was win.com and neither would work, I felt bad.

Didn't have enough coffee in me yet I suppose. :)

Hi I am back and this time I have my computer right beside me at my job. I did what u said and renamed the file but when I copied it to the c drive, it said copied win.com\win.cnf So when i looked in the dir of the floppy it said I had
win.com
win.cnf 1 file 24,496 bytes
does that mean when i renamed it after i saved it to disk that it made it an directory instead of renaming the file?? i had a friend of mines who's in the states emailed me all the files that i'm missing. and he got it off of his win98 computer. he even sent me the win.com file or exe and i looked in the properities and it said "type of file MS DOS and under Program Tab:
CMD Line A:\WIN.COM So what am I to do now? My system also isn't autodetecting my CD ROM
Drive E: = Driver MSCD001 unit 0. I have my driver disc so i think it shouldn't be a proble to reinstall the driver, I HOPE!!:-)

I rebooted my system without the startup disk and kept pushing F8 and I got to the safe mode option screen and I chose safe mode and it said "HIMEM is testing extended memory... done" then the 2 files that are missing or corrupted came up
c:\windows\dblbuff.sys and
c:\windows\ifshlp.sys and now it's at the c:\ prompt

I have thos two files on disk that my friend sent me from off of his wind98 running laptop. should I load them and see what happends????? I notice that the win.com not found didn't come up also. why is that?

it says now cannot find the win.com, unable to continue loading windows. Was I suppose to delete the win.ini file before I put on the win.com file that my friend sent me? Was that why it shut off my computer everytime? the win98_25.cab zip file has the win.cnf in it and none of the .com files are win.com And the win.cnf file properties says it's a speed dial file, is that what we're looking for or want?
