Comment:
When I try to start up my computer (win98 SE) I get the message while it's still in DOS, following files is missing or corrupt : C:\windows\DBLBUFF.SYS C:\windows\IFSHLP.SYS and Can Not find WIN.COM unable to continue to load windows!!!!!! please help me if you can and tell me what to do!!!!!!!!! I have my WIN98SE CD and I'm on y computer at my job.
I'VE TRIED TO START MY WINDOWS WITH MY START UP DISK BUT IT KEPT GIVING ME THAT SAME MESSAGE. IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN START UP DISK AND BOOT DISK AND IF SO, HOW DO I MAKE A BOOT DISK???? I DON'T KNOW ANYONE WHO HAS WIN98SE BOOT DISK?? BUT I DO HAVE MY WIN98SE CD!!!
It won't start in safe mode. It keep telling me that those 2 files are corrupt and missing win.com. Will I be able to possibably start in safe mode once I copy that win.cnf file to a floppy? and how do I rename it? (By right clicking or "save as") once I find it on cd? and I'm renaming it "win.com" I presume!! if I am correct, how do I copy from the floppy to the hard drive or system in DOS? what do I type in to make that happend?
Of course you can't start in Safe-Mode. No win.com
You will need to extract the file using your start-up disk. Sounds like yours is bad. Go to another computer using windows98 and create a new start up disk. Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs Click the StartUp Disk Tab and click create Disk.
Insert the disk in the other computer and it should take you to the StartUp Menu.
ONCE I GET A STARTUP DISK FROM ANOTHER COMPUTER , YOU WANT ME TO US THAT DISK AND PUT INTO MINES?????? AND WOULD I STILL NEED TO EXTRACT THE WIN.CNF FILE, IF THE NEW START UP DISK WORKS?
CAN I USE AN OLD START UP DISK THAT I HAD USED/SAVED FROM MY COMPUTER ABOUT A YEAR AGO AND SEE IF IT HAS THAT FILE ON IT? ALSO I DOWNLOADED A BOOT DISK FOR WIN98SE OF THE INTERNET (IT'S NAMED WIN98SE.EXE), CAN I USE THAT BOOT DISK AND SEE IF IT WORKS???? OR SHOULD/COULD I JUST TAKE IT OFF OF MY WIN98SE CD AND PUT IT ON MY COMPUTER FROM THE FLOPPY???
The start-disk nor the bootdisk will have the file you need. The start-up disk will allow you to extract the file you need from the CD-ROM. The file must be extracted. You must use the start-up disk as it will allow the extract command. Use either start-up disk. I thought you said the first disk would give you the same error is why I wanted you to make another using a different computer.
I'M AT MY JOB AND I'M TRYING TO GET ALL INFO I CAN FROM YOU BEFORE I GO BACK TO MY HOME 15 MIN AWAY. THAT IS WHY I ASKED YOU CAN I USE THE OLDER STARUP DISK I REMEMBERED SEEING/HAVING!!! IF IT DOESN'T GIVE ME THAT MESSAGE(THE OLD DISK) THEN I SHOULD STILL GOTO THE CD AND EXTRACT THE FILE? OR CAN I EXTRACT THE FILE FROM THE WIN98SECD USING THE COMPUTER I'M ON NOW AT MY JOB AND SAVE IT TO A FLOPPY AND THEN DO STEP#9??
You could extract it to a floppy on the computer you are using at work using SFC (system file checker). Then on the computer at home from the A: prompt deleted C:\windows\win.ini Rename the file on the floppy win.ini Copy it to C:\windows. Never done it that way but don't know why that would not work.
Yes you can do it that way as I just did. After extracting win.cnf to a floppy I restarted to Dos and deleted win.ini. I then renamed win.cnf on the floppy to win.ini. A:>copy a:win.ini c:windows Rebooted no probs.
I found the Win.cnf file in a zipped file on the win98 cd and I copied it onto a floppy disk. Now correct me if I'm wrong, I should go and load this onto my computer on the c:drive and then rename it once loaded to win.com????? also if I can get to the page where it askes me to boot/load or whatever with CD ROM support, should I put in the WIN98CD when i'm trying to boot/startup? Because I did git there once before last night when all this happeneed but I didn't insert the win98 CD!!! So should I try all that again before renaming/replacing this file to see if the program/computer takes the needed files off of the CD disc itself???? Sorry for not mentioning that piece of info!!
OW DO I RENAME THE WIN.CNF FILE ON THE FLOPPY????? WHEN I LOOK AT THE PROPERTIES FOR THAT FILE IT SAYS:TYPE OF FILE "SPEED DAIL" AND DESCRIPTION "WIN". THIS IS THE RIGHT FILE CORRECT??? JUST TELL ME HOW TO TAKE THIS FLOPPY AND DO WHATS NEXT (STEP BY STEP) PLEASE!!! :-) I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP WITH THIS
Rename it on the floppy. Right click Rename and name it win.com Go Home Put your BOOTDISK in and when it gets to the A: prompt type a:\>copy a:win.com c:windows leaving a space between copy and a and com and c:
Use the boot disk you downloaded today to get to the A:\> prompt.
DO I STILL NEED TO DELETE THE WIN.INI FILE THAT'S ON MY COMPUTER? IF SO, HOW DO I DO THAT BEFORE I COPY WIN.COM FROM FLOPPY TO C:\WINDOWS??? OR DOES IT NOT MATTER IF I DELETE THAT FILE OR NOT?
It should ask, if it is there to overwrite the file. You can check if the file exist in windows. At the A:\> type c: then enter. At the C:\> type cd windows then enter At C:\windows> type dir/p It should be located towards the top. Select any key to view more files if it is not until you get back to the prompt. If it is there: Go back to C:\windows> and type del win.com This will deleted the file.
1. Rename win.cnf on the floppy win.com 2. Go Home 3. Insert Boot Disk you got today. 4. Boot the computer. 5. Once at the a:\> remove the boot disk and insert the floppy with win.com 5. At the a:\> Type del c:windows\win.com 6. At the a:\> Type copy a:win.com c:windows 7. Remove floppy 8. Reboot the computer
Copy and Paste this to notepad or word and take it home with you.
After telling them to restore their system files from the boot-disk and having them try to go to safe-mode, as I would normally not have done seeing the problem was win.com and neither would work, I felt bad.
Didn't have enough coffee in me yet I suppose. :)
Terrell was very patient and polite, I don't mind helping out anyone, no matter how much time, for people like that.
Deepword I appreciate your post and you have a very nice day!
Mesich Hi I am back and this time I have my computer right beside me at my job. I did what u said and renamed the file but when I copied it to the c drive, it said copied win.com\win.cnf So when i looked in the dir of the floppy it said I had win.com win.cnf 1 file 24,496 bytes does that mean when i renamed it after i saved it to disk that it made it an directory instead of renaming the file?? i had a friend of mines who's in the states emailed me all the files that i'm missing. and he got it off of his win98 computer. he even sent me the win.com file or exe and i looked in the properities and it said "type of file MS DOS and under Program Tab: CMD Line A:\WIN.COM So what am I to do now? My system also isn't autodetecting my CD ROM Drive E: = Driver MSCD001 unit 0. I have my driver disc so i think it shouldn't be a proble to reinstall the driver, I HOPE!!:-)
the 2 other files that I'm missing says in the properties that open with unknown program. Does that suppose to be like that or there is a button on it that says change. Do I change it and if I do what am I suppose to change it too??? (MS DOS maybe) DON't KNOW
NOW I TRIED REBOOTING MY SYSTEM WITH THE REBOOT DISK AND I THINK IT DELETED THE WIN.COM FILE BECAUSE NOW IT SHOWS THE SAME 2 CORRUPT FILES AND THE CANNOT FIND WIN.COM , UNABLE TO CONTINUE LOADING WINDOWS. I DON'T KNOW WHY AFTER I SAVED THE WIN.COM FILE AND REBOOTED IT SHUT THE COMPUTER DOWN/OFF. WAS I SUPPOSE TO DELETE SOMETHING OR A FILE BEFORE I LOADED THE WIN.COM FILE OR SOMETHING???? SO NOW I'M BACK TO WHERE I STARTED. SO, I'M GOING TO LEAVE MY COMPUTER HER TONIGHT AND WILL BE BACK IN THE MORNING TO SEE WHAT ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE ME. I'M I GERMANY(MILITARY) AND I'M 6HRS AHEAD OF EASTERN TIME ZONE, SO IF YOU WANT TO POST SOMETHING I WILL GET IT AND TRY IT PROBABLY WHEN YOU'RE SLEEP AND HAVE A RESPONSE FOR YOU WHEN YOU WAKE UP!!!:-) I WANT TO SAY THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND YOU HELPING ME OUT.
If you want to fix this now, I am here to do it now. Not Sleepy at all right now. I'm a night owl!!!!!!!:-) it's up too you, I'm the one who needs your help so I can't be choosey
Give me just a few as there are many many people on this great forum to help other than myself. I will e-mail them and hopefully they shall respond also.
I rebooted my system without the startup disk and kept pushing F8 and I got to the safe mode option screen and I chose safe mode and it said "HIMEM is testing extended memory... done" then the 2 files that are missing or corrupted came up c:\windows\dblbuff.sys and c:\windows\ifshlp.sys and now it's at the c:\ prompt
I have thos two files on disk that my friend sent me from off of his wind98 running laptop. should I load them and see what happends????? I notice that the win.com not found didn't come up also. why is that?
they copied!!!!!!!!! now do you want me to reboot and try to goto sfe mode again or see if it goes thru the startup process without the boot disk and the win.com file?
it says now cannot find the win.com, unable to continue loading windows. Was I suppose to delete the win.ini file before I put on the win.com file that my friend sent me? Was that why it shut off my computer everytime? the win98_25.cab zip file has the win.cnf in it and none of the .com files are win.com And the win.cnf file properties says it's a speed dial file, is that what we're looking for or want?
Should I try to boot up in safe mode now or put back on the win.com file I got from my friend????? If so, do i need to delete the win.cnf file or the win.ini file or should i look in the win directory or windows and see if those files are still there and if they are, which one am I suppose to delete, before I copy the one on this floppy?
Sorry about that!!! Didin't realized I was doing that. This is my first time here and It was very late and I'm 9hrs ahead,so please forgive me for being human and making a mistake!!! I was putting his name as me replying to him and the message was for him!!! I will look and pay attention more closely!!!!!! I do have manners because my mother raised me well!!!! Thank you for pointing out what I was doing wrong, but I am an adult and you can just be polite and tell me that I'm making a mistake and not be unfriendly!!!! The person I am working with I guess knew what I was meaning, but I just didn't catch it!!!!
