Whenever I try to boot up my pc an error comes up at the final stage just as my active desktop is about to appear saying problem with iexplorer you computer will shut down (or something to that effect) I have tried everything. Safe mode command prompt etc. and then reinstalled windows 98 only to have the same error appear again. I have lost all files and programs on my computer and can still not use it. Help would be appreciated...(to put it mildly)..

You can try booting to MS-DOS and typing:
FDISK /MBR
which will sometimes fix it. Boot-Sector viruses can cause a migrane headache.

Hi sclarke, Russ, Don Miller, hi everyone,

A pity you lost files and programs! Did you already format your hard disk?

If you don't have anything left on the disk, the best solution is to format again properly... (you probably forgot to fdisk)

Good luck!

Have a good day,
Gérard from Paris, France
