Boot sector virus warning

Comment:
I have recently discovered a virus in my boot sector, which means that i cannot install a operating system onto my hard drive. Everytime i do this i get the error "boot sector write virus. Continue Y/N". I can format my hard drive by using a startup disk but i still get the error. I have also tried fdisk/mbr and have scanned the hard drive using F-Prot, NDD, Macafee and several other programs, but they all fail to locate a virus. I would really like to get this hard drive working as it is quite new, about five months old. The hard drive is a 10 gig, seagate. Any help over this matter is greatly appreciated.

your floppies are infected....boot off of a CLEAN floppy and do what you're doing it's odd that none of the virus scanners you listed could find anything....you might want to submit one of those floppies to them and have them see if they find a new virus

Have you used Linux on the hard drive at some time?
When Linux (or other Unix derivatives)are being installed they sometimes write code to the hard drive boot sector and when the user boots up the screen scrolls "010101010£ forever. The boot sector virus program (eg Trend) interprets this as a virus and screams at the user. If this is the case you may not really have a virus at all!
You can disable the virus program in Setup or take the Continue option.

Yes, turn off virus protection in your CMOS setup program. Your message sounds like it is warning you that something is trying to change the boot sector, which installing an operating system does.

that's not a virus. It's your BIOS protecting your boot sector. Go into your BIOS and turn off the boot sector protection.

try a low level format within your bios or enable SMART within BIOS
