Boot into safe mode

CPU/Ram: Compaq Deskpro Pentium 3

How do you boot into safe mode on a compaq Deskpro Pentium 3? Ctri doesnt do it, just get keyboard error. Neither does Del. If someone has an answer can you email me at oldilocks@shaw.ca

F8 should bring up the start menu. F5 will boot directly to safe mode on some systems. If neither work, run msconfig and click advanced, and place check mark in "enable startup menu".

F8 and F% is correct, but you can't do it right at the start of the boot. You must wait until you see the Windows starting message (or just before).

you can also use 'ctrl' key for win98.

Thanks dave01 once I checked enable startup menu it would boot to safe mode

Thanks for posting back. And Mel is right, you must press F8 or F5 just as "starting Windows 98" appears on the screen. The window of opportunity is very small so it's best to keep tapping the F5 or F8 keys. F5 bypasses startup group (on some systems) and F8 brings up the start menu. CTRL has never worked for me, even though that is Microsoft's solution.
