Comment:

Windows will not boot correctly - I'm given a himen.sys failure. So, I reinstalled Windows 98 and it booted a few times after that, last night. Then I tried booting up this morning and same-old-thing. Any ideas?

rename your config.sys file to config.old and autoexec.bat to autoexec.old and try to boot your system. Windows 98 doesn't need these files to operate. You may have something in one of the files that is incorrect and stopping windows from working properly. If that works, rename config.old to config.sys and try. If it boots, do the same thing with autoexec.old. When you find the one causing the problem, rem everything out and try it, then "UN-REM" a line at a time until you find the culprit.

Does the computer boot okay everytime with a boot disk in the floopy? If so, look for this entry in c:\config.sys and REM it out... DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:ON

What does the himem error say? If it mentions cache, try disabling cache in you BIOS Setup Program and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you have cache memory or controller problems.

98 DOESNT NEED THEM , BUT SOME OF YOUR HARDWARE , NAMELY PLUG-IN CARDS, USE SOME OF THE CONFIGURATIONS FOR THEMSELVES

WINDOWS WILL NOT OPERATE WITHOUT HIMEM.SYS
SO IF YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF IT(BOOTDISK)OR OR A COPY OF IT IN

" C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\EBD\HIMEM.SYS "

REPLACE THIS FILE

BACK-UP OF ESSENTIAL FILES, IS PRICELESS
