I am getting BOOT DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER error when starting windows. I have tried the sys c: in DOS from a: it only made the problem worse before I could boot into windows with the 98se cd now it just hangs and does nothing. The file system should be working fine its a brand new harddrive and motherboard.
Please if you know anything on how to troubleshoot this please tell...

When you did the sys c:, did you get the `system transferred' message? In other words, was it successful?

If you formatted the drive then windows is gone. You need to reinstall it.
If you did a 'format c:/s' or did a 'sys c:' after formatting it should boot to a c:\> prompt (when not using a bootdisk) but you still need to install windows.

HI ALL 1) go into bios setup --is hdd being detected correctly? ---in boot options is it set correctly? IF not sure post what you have.
2)boot to dos and run [fdisk/status] is it correct? post results if not sure
3) do you have the hdd manufacture hdd utility program?
4)if you have the program did you put an overlay on hdd?
5)this is a new system and you have not had it working yet?
6)does the hdd require a 80wire IDE and you have only a 40 wire IDE.

If you have a floppy in the floppy drive and you have A: as the first boot device, you will get that error message.
