Please help. My fathers computer seems to have a problem....He had problems loading a scanner, but finally got that to go. He restarted the computer and then he just got the C: prompt with the msg Insert System Disk and Press Enter.
I made a copy of my system at work (both running windows 98) and we tried that. We also had a problem with the floppy drive not working but that seems to be working now. But when we put in the system disk it still doesn't do anything. I tried putting in the windows 98 boot disk and that didn't work.
I do have Norton Utilities (that was loaded on the machine) but that doesn't seem to help very much because that is the D: and it won't recognize anything else. I can't even do dir to list files on the C: (A: works)

I am not a computer wiz but can figure things out with some...maybe a lot...of help.

Thank you,
Joanne

It sound like the system files on the C: drive got deleted somehow. Try booting with the system disk, and at the A:\ prompt, type (without the quotes) "sys C:". This will copy the system files needed to boot back to the C: drive. Then reboot without the disk in the drive. Hope this helps.

You may have lost the BIOS setting for the Hard Drive. When your system starts, enter BIOS setup. Each BIOS can be different. It will usually tell you on the screen. You might have to hit del key or Cntl+Alt+Enter, or hit F1. Whatever.

When you are in the BIOS setup check the date. If it is something like 01/01/1900 then you have lost your battery for holding the BIOS info. Reset all the date, time, floppy, IDE drives manually. DO NOT power off the computer. It should run ok. Then get a battery for the mainboard. When you have the battery, you will need to power system down, replace the battery then reset the BIOS info again. Then you should be ok for another 5 years.

Ok...that didn't work at all. The battery is fine. I copied the sys from the A: to C: but that didn't work either.

Any other ideas?
