Books - They're still in fashion

I found when I started out in this caper that it always helps if you have some sort of guide to do things like fixing certain problems, what files belong where and what should I know about my computer etc.
I bought books on DOS, a Computer Dictionary and a book on the Registry and the big WINDOWS 95 Resource Kit [also on WIN95 Cd-Rom]. I'm no expert but reading help files and text and .inf files do help. I also printed many system files to use as a reference if something goes wrong [System.ini, Win.ini. Autoexec.bat. Config.sys and all the .inf files and other .ini files.Because of this I've managed to solve every problem I've had [most the same as in this forum] so it helps to know your computer, at least the basics, and you can solve most problems before doing drastic things like Formatting, but then I'm just a smart-arse at times and have lots of time on my hands.Just for the hell of it a built a new computer from scratch just to see if I could do it, it's now my 'crash test dummy' that I test things on before I put things in this one.

You're right, but books? Take time to read something or do a little work or research? Sounds kinda drastic to me. I want instant answers, quick fixes, have no idea of how or why my pc works and don't want to know. And what does that help button and those readme's do? I got good money in this pc, I expect that when I slam a program in, it should work like it says on the box and not give me them stupid error messages. Then I ask a simple question and when I try what they say, it don't work, isn't my pc just like everyone else's? And so on, but you're still right, keep at it.

You've got it right, Bruce. That is the mentality of most people with computers. But in defense of the "morons" (and that is not much of an exaggeration), computers/software manufacturers take the attitude that everything is simple, easy, user-friendly, anybody can use it; nobody tells people that pc's have all sorts of imperfections, one of which is the user (s).
