Comment:

After partitioning my drives, I rebooted the computer before I formatted them. Now, when the computer starts up, it says Gateway, then goes to a blank screen with a cursor on the top left hand side of the screen. Nothing else even with the bootdisk in place. Have I officially screwed things up, or is there a way I can get the c:\ prompt back so I can finish formatting the partitioned drives and install the operating system.

My guess is that Gateway have some sort of recovery partition on the HD, which puts in their own features and this is what's hanging it up.

This website seems to support my view and may be of interest:

I used "Gateway Partition" in Google and there appeared to be several hits, so you might be able to uncover something.

Otherwise, see if someone comes along on here who knows something about Gateway's particular arrangements.

Well, I finally got it to prompt A:\> but now, when I type in "format c:/s" it says it is a bad command or file name. I don't understand why it is not recognizing these commands. Is there something else I could type in?

I suppose so - but to no great effect

"bad command or filename" means either you have made a spelling mistake, or else format.com cannot be found on the floppy (or wherever)

If reinstalling Win98 is your goal, there is no need to use the system (' /s') switch

Get another bootdisk. Apparently the one you're using doesn't have the format command on it.

You should be using the Gateway software to recover. Check the Gateway web site for help. The people here are giving you instructions on how to recover using Microsoft software.

I think that by creating another boot disk will be the answer. When I type in Dir in the Dos prompt, it does not list any format directories. Let's see if my neighbors are home

"format directories" hmmmm - no, I don't suppose there are.

Can't go wrong by trying another diskette
