Black Streaks Across My Monitor

About three weeks ago my computer started displaying grey streaks across my screen. These streaks coincide with whatever is being displayed. They run across from left to right. I have a hunch that my video card may have overheated. I'm not sure about this though and am seeking advice on how to diagnose the problem. It doesn't appear to be related to any of my monitor settings.
I have a Hewlett Packard 9680C and am running Windows 98SE. The monitor is also a HP, model M70.

I agree that it's probably the video card. But I would try the monitor on another system to be sure.

I would venture a guess that its the monitor. I had a proview monitor that did that the streaks would go away if the cable wiggles was in a certain position, and come back in another. Wiggle the cable and see if it changes, and try out a different monitor.

You've had a couple of good responses.
Usually about now someone chimes in with the suggestion that it's magnetised. Just in case this happens again "it is not". Magnetism causes patches of wrong colour that are consistently in the same area (I've repaired TV's for years).
Sorry this aint much help, except to say "what it isn't".
