my icons for desktop etc are black squares the ones on bottom left side and theyre black in the programs
does this mean my harddrive is going?

steppenwolf1, For the icon problem try starting your computer in SAFE mode then restart it in Normal mode. This will rebuild the ShellIconCache file which may have become corrupted. I doubt that this problem is related to your hard drive.

or just find and delete shelliconcache file, then reboot which will force it to rebuild without screwing up your desktop icon placement from going into safe mode.
It`s always amazed me with 9x that going into safe mode completely wrecks your icon layoun in the normal mode, something that Bill Gates should have sorted by 95b. however you can get a nice little utility called ezdesk that will remeber your normal settings and enable to to restore them instantly without having to manually arearrange them.
You can alkso download TweakUI which can also rebuild your corrupted icons without having to reboot.

I too note this problem of icon placement. Although I know no fix I did work out a way to restore them more simply, especially since I prefer them not lined up on the left.
You screen capture your desktop. Now use some photo/picture program to reduce the contrast and brightness of the capture (in PhotoShop -50 Contrast, +20 Brightness). Save the file as a faint background for use when required.
You bring up the background when needed, move the icons onto the "ghost" and line-up.
Incidentally where shelliconcache is obstinate you can force a rebuild by binning all the desktop "shortcuts (ONLY)", rebooting, then restoring the shortcuts. This is the only procedure that works everytime for me.

Derek, Here's a simple fix to restore you icon positions which works well. Go to the link below and download layout.zip.
After you have downloaded the file, extract its contents into a folder. Open the folder and double click LAYOUT.REG to merge the information into your registry. Now copy the library LAYOUT.DLL to your Windows\System32 directory. To save your current desktop icon layout, right click on the Recycle Bin or My Computer on your desktop and select Save Desktop Icon Layout. To restore your previous desktop icon layout, right click the Recycle Bin or My Computer and select Restore Desktop Icon Layout. It works with Windows 98/98SE/ME and XPTufenuf

Thx Tufenuf
Sounds like a good quick fix, I'll have a look at it.
Sometimes my CD writer fails to get seen during bootup (almost certainly a hardware problem). When this happens various Windows within folders on the desktop get disturbed. It might fix that too so it adds an extra interest.
Of-course I could just replace the CD writer (or take a look inside it - shock horror but I've been inside CD units before).

Worked like a charm Tufenuf (made an undo for reg entries, as always).
Didn't help folder problem but that was too hopeful. Much quicker than pulling icons back over my "ghost".

Just to say that as it turned out it proved useful that I made an undo for that layout saver.
One of my registry cleaners didn't like it and promptly took out some registry entries so that it no longer worked.
Cutting a long story short I found that for W9x you should put the file in c:\windows\system (not c:\windows\system32, which is probably correct for XP).
Now runs fine again with no complaint from registry cleaners.
