BIOS Upgrades for Compaq Presario?

Hi, I have a question: I have a Compaq Presario 1080 Notebook. It currently has a 1.3GB hard drive in it, but I want to upgrade it to a 30GB version. Unfortunately, it looks like the Phoneix BIOS (dated 1996) detects it as a 8GB hard drive (probably its upper limit). I tried installing the Diagnostic Partition from the diagnostics disks I got from Compaqs site. It seemed to work, tried to install the Diagnostics partition, but then when rebooted it freezes. I can't even boot from most floppies I WAS booting from (very weird). I found one that I could boot from a Win 95 boot disk in Safe Mode Command Line Only mode, but can't seem to get FDisk to even remove the partial Diagnostic Partition. Here is my question: I'm looking to upgrade the Phoenix BIOS to something that can recognize hard drives greater than 8GB. I checked the Phoenix site, but was told to get BIOS upgrades direct from the manufacturer. The Compaq site doesn't appear to have any ROMPaqs that work for the Presario 1000 series, so now what? Am I just hosed? Anyone have any ideas?

Go to the hard drive manufactures web site and download the BIOS program to overcome the large harddrive. In fact most new larger hard drives come with a floppy which has the program on it.

DelPart should delete all the partitions for you, allowing you to start from scratch with fdisk. http://hercules.lss.ksu.edu/download/MSSTUFF/delpart.exe

the diagnostics partition is a hidden partition you will need more than fdisk to remove it , some to try would be GDISK.exe DELPART.EXE and AEFDISK you can get delpart and aefdisk along with some hard disk diags which may have a drive overlay program in them , several brands covered http://bootdisk.com/utility.htm
