BIOS Snags?

I had a system returned recently with the following snag. It hung with a fault something like "divide overflow error" before W95 fired up I reformatted the Hard drive and now i can't even install DOS or a CD rom driver. Does this sound like the result of a bad flash? The punter insists he didn't try to flash the BIOS. Any ideas?

I have seen this error in dos while playing certain games. I think it is something to do with the video card memory and/or drivers.
