Ok, I need to update my BIOS on my ASUS - P2L97 Rev 2.05 as it is printed on my mobo. Now do I have to download this from ASUS site or the Award site? I don't want to screw this up, so can someone point me to the right direction. The reason for this upgrade is support my bigger hard drive.
Thanks

You'll want the most recent version. Also, there's several P2L97 boards listed there. Make sure you use the right update.

Ok thanks Dave, but all I'm missing now is the flashing utility program... where do I go to find that?

There's a link in the left column of that page for the 'bios flash utility'. I think asupd328 does the update in windows and aflash from dos. The other downloads are older or specialized versions.

Well I don't know what is wrong Dave ... I have the AFLASH utility and the right version of BIOS. But this is what I get when I try to flash it in DOS of course.

At this point the computer just locks up. Can it be due to overclocking of My CPU, or is this something else?Overclocked

Already reseted it to default and still have the same result.

Possibly the file was corrupted or maybe you used a bootdisk that loaded memory management drivers.
I have an Asus P5A-B board in this computer and just updated it to see if I had any problems. I first tried updating it with the wrong file and got an error message. When I used the right file, my screen showed the same as yours expect I didn't get the error message. So I think you have the right file.
I had problems once or twice with the floppy disk or drive when doing updates so I no longer do updates from floppies. Create a folder in the root directory of the hard drive named something like BIOS and copy the update and the flasher there.
Then reboot the computer. Before the OS starts to load, start tapping F8. From the menu choose 'safe mode command prompt only'. That keeps any drivers from loading and leaves you at a c:\> prompt. Then type
cd bios and enter. The prompt should show c:\bios>. Then type aflash and enter to start the update. When I attempted to download my update from Asus's site it wouldn't download correctly. I did a google search for the zip file name and located one at driver guide. If you can't do the update as I recommended above then maybe the file is corrupted and you'll need to find one elsewhere.

You may also want to try different flasher versions. I have several versions from updates I've done on Asus boards in the past. I used an earlier version when I just flashed mine. I can email them to you if nothing else works.

Yeah I tried it right off the hard drive with the same results. So I will search for a new flasher and update of the bios on google. But it might be helpful for you to send a flash utility to my email, cause then I would know for sure that it works.
Thanks

Ok I got it finally :), you were right... it was the aflash.exe program that was messed up, so I downloaded another one , I believe a version just b4 the new one at Asus and it worked fine. So all Flashed up and good to go. Thanks for all your help Dave.

A good lesson there for people who are addicted to always getting the latest versions of their software or firmware. Newer versions are not always perfect.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm glad you finally got it flashed. The Asus updates are usually pretty good but sometimes downloading stuff from their site is a nightmare.

Hi Dave and Wolf,It is possible that one of you can send me the good flasher please, i have the same problem right now with the asus p2l97, i took the revision 1009 but any of the flasher want to works.
So if you can send me at davolution@hotmail.com, i'll be so thankfull!!!!
Thanks
Davolution

There is only room for a certain number of flash memory chips in the program. They bump off old flash chips to make room for newer ones as new versions come out. You have to have the version that recognizes the chip on your board.

Artic Wolf, you may be interested to know that I've been playing with a P2L97 and a Coppermine Celeron 600 on a slocket. It runs at 750 (9x83) with no problems. But you could not upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP with such a setup. Neither OS will run on an LX chipset motherboard with a Celeron 2 on it. And there is no known workaround.
If you are happy with 98, you could upgrade on the cheap. I spent $8.00 on the slocket (including shipping) and $15.00 for the CPU. A 766 Celeron would give you over 950 MHz at 83 MHz FSB. 863 at 75 MHz FSB.

could someone please email me the older flasher. Would be much appreciated.

Cheers
