When I try to install Windows 98 Upgrade over Windows 95a, I get this message during setup "Your computer already has an operating system installed, which cannot be upgraded by this version of Setup. You need to obtain the windows 98 upgrade. Message SU0168!" Huh? I do have 98 upgrade!!! Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe you have been given the wrong disc in the box but if upgrade is written on the disc
it must be the right one see if upgrade is written on the sleeve as well all the discs are the same it just depends what serial you put in to get either upgrade or full version!! You could back up your files and format then install it from scratch you don't need 95 on to upgrade. It just asks for you to insert your 95 cd to confirm upgrade rights...

The version it refers to might be the last version of Win95, that is Win95c, not sure. Put the CD in and look for any Readme files or on the box about system requiremnets etc. Win95a is a FAT16 system and anything after is FAT32 and that could be why.

I agree. If win98 must use FAT 32 then 89 can't upgrade 95a

I think the reason that no one is offering any real help with this su0168 prob, is that using a oem cd to upgrade is supposed to be illegal... well so is coping music or movies but most of us have done that!

This is how it's supposed to work with an oem cd:

1. Change win.com to something else... like win.cox or something

2. Change winver.exe to something along the same lines like winver.ext. Now log off and start up at the dos prompt, not into windows, and put in your cd then type "setup" with out the quotations. (If your cd rom drive letter is "d" at the prompt type 'd' then 'setup').

3. Setup program will detect there is another version of windows and will want to install the newer version into windows.000, when this happens choose 'other directory' and drop the 000.

That should do it...

The answer has been given already. Back up your old stuff. Fornat disk and install win 98 from scratch. Make sure you know enough about your existing hardware before, though.

I got serious headaches on my Comopaq Presario 9548.

There two main reasons for your problem, One is that you need to install Windoc/98/doc.
Because the files in windows have been removed either by uninstalling other programs or by a burglar. If you unplug your computer and then plug it back into a different receptical you will discover that you will have the same problem.

Thank you!!
I also had a "OEM" copy of Windows and renaming Win.com and Winver.exe solved the problem. I have a SCSI machine and of course in MSDOS would not find the CDROM as the SCSI drivers are not loaded. I booted from the Windows 98 Boot Diskette and this has an excellent routine on it which goes and finds the CDROM. From there on it was no problem.

This may help and it is from MS...

Message SU0168

Your computer already has an operating system installed, which cannot be upgraded by this version of Setup. Please obtain the Windows 95 (or Windows 98) Upgrade.

This error can occur when you are attmpting to install an OEM version of Windows 98 over a previous version of Windows.
-or-
An application has installed an OEM version of SetupX.dll that makes it appear that your current version of Windows is the OEM version.

If you suspect this is the case, replace SetupX.dll with the correct version from your current install media.

Place your Windows 95 or Windows 98 CD in your CD-ROM drive.
From a command prompt, change to your CD-ROM drive letter.
Type "Extract /a base4.cab SetupX.dll /l c:\"
Copy the SetupX.dll from your C: to your Windows\System directory.
Run Windows 98 Second Edition Setup again.

I am posting this just in case none of the above works for someone having this problem. I tried what microsoft said and then used info from here and got a new dll file from the internet and still couldn't install win98 over win95. I went to this web site and did the clean install and now have win98.
web address: http://www.cmpnet.com/win98/upgrade.html
good luck!
