Beta Direct Draw Has Expired! ???

I have a P150 (Don't Laugh) 32 RAM, and a Trident 9680 1 meg. I have freshly formatted my HD (Again) and reinstalled all my programs. When I attempt to use my G2 Player, run MPEG movies etc, I get this message (and nothing else) : "Microsoft Direct Draw, Beta Direct Draw has expired, Please update." What is direct draw? Expired?-Like Bread? Whats up with that? I have installed DX6 to make my screen purdy but it certainly has done nothing for this problem. Can anyone inform me on what Direct Draw is? How can I fix my problem? What will I do without my favorite radio station while I'm mouse potatoeing?

I've had the same problem with the "Beta Direct Draw" I don't know what did this because i haven't changed (installed/reistalled) anything in the past week and yesterday the message came up. This problem has affected many things such as a few of my games and probably a lot more that i havn't found yet. Can you please write me back with a way i can fix this!!

Appearently caused by expired beta DX files in some versions, updates and cores (DX runtime updates; or some programs that may have installed DX updates. I fixed my system by down loading and installing the full version of DX 6.1 from the Microsoft site. the file is dx61eng.exe (english ver.). This file contains both drivers and runtime files. Do not get just the core or runtime update file as it will not solve the problem. Took me a day to figure it out; perhaps a testimony to my lack of CPU savvy.

It happened to me after i loaded DX 6.1 from a maximum PC demo disk. Its a bug, or microsofts way of making you go to their site and download the full version so they can estimate the number of users, or scan your hardrive. I would advise against going to any microsoft site and get it somewhere else.

i had the same problem right after i installed a new vid card....i tried bobs fix of d/l dx61eng.exe, which worked. as far as i can tell, mickysoft-in-the-head allowed directx6 to be distibuted with various hardware, and its a beta....who knows how long 6.1 will hold out for? as for POL's paranoia...lol its prolly spot on...build a cheap 386 with a 42MB drive with bare bones to download to...let mickysoft scan that ;)

well if anyone care to read this it will help....go to your internet serch engine and just type in ( dx6.1.exe ) find this by scrolling down ...click on it ..download it and save it then shutdown,reboot,then open it. run it.follow the promts.in other words install it.then once it tells you to restart. do so...this is what i did and ...you bloody beuty,no more ...direct draw expired...

Ok people heres the solution...i did a lil research and found out that you all have installed one way or the other..be it from the maximum PC CD...or a new game, whatever..an early version of Direct X 6.1..which thanx to Microsoft was saddled with a blue flame special beta version on Direct Draw. NOW...i have read some of the "solutions" here...and laffed at most of them..one guy is suggesting reformatting and reinstalling Windows..clearly someone that either works for Microsoft or just has no clue, so do me a favor dont opt for that particular plan of action..its a waste of your time and a major pain in the ass. SO..here it is..you are all looking to a solution to update Direct Draw...thats not the program you need to update..its the Direct X 6.1 that need to be fixed. And the only way to do that is by Installing a new and final full version of Direct X 6.1.
What you need to do is goto Filez.Com and do a search for dx61eng.exe if for some damn reason you cannot find it..i will graciously send it to you, if not for anything but to end this "Direct Draw Beta Has Expired" seige.

Hello yup there is problem with direct x 6.1. The simple solution is this, that uninstall it and remain with directx6 or leave the programmers to solve the bug in directx6.1. Bye

Well, i think i got rid of the DirectDraw problem, finally! I downloaded dx70eng from http://download.microsoft.com/download/win98SE/Update/7.0/W9X/EN-US/DX70eng.exe and then I used Makhail Nitko's idea by deleting Direct3D, DirectDraw, DirectMusic, DirectPlay, and DirectX. Then i installed DirectX 7.0 and once i rebooted my computer, the problem was gone! I hope this helps you!

It took me a while to figure out that fix with all of the associated files...thanx mark for the addition to the fix...your fix works for most problems...it depends on which DirectX you had...on versions that were extremely old...the files would not overwrite with the new version because the new version had different files to make it work so there was a conflict...your fix works for replacing old but not too-old versions of that DirectX problem...anyhow thanx...it would have been a pain for everyone to follow those instructions completely with all versions of DirectX...its very time consuming...anyhow thank you all for the thx I gotten from you...this problem was my big headache and I hope that no-one has the same problem again and in hopes for the future...I will be working on modifieing a DirectX editor...I hope microsoft does not sue me :) (I'll just release it somewhere in warez)

Update on my PC stats:
AMD Athlong 650 128mb Ram 40 GB HD VooDoo5 5500 AGP SOYO Motherboard Adelphia SURFboard cable modem (all others are same) (ps: still have that old can of RAID, shot so many souls with it, just blasted em out of the sky, *stupid stupid beeeeeez)
well ... I dont have the exact solution to your problem (those bas@#rds at Microsoft made it damn hard to remove) but I have a very good recomendation. Save your registry before doing any 'hazardous' installation. To save your registry just press start>run>regedit and highlight the 'my computer' icon at the top ... select file>export registry and you saved a coppy ... (if you use WNT or W2K, to get to regedit you need to press start>run>command>regedit). If you screw up on the new directX8 installation, you need to exectute the .reg file you made when you created the backup of your registry, and then just delete the files I specified in my other earlyer fix. (warning: I do not have a list of specified files for WNT or W2K) but I think they are similar *not sure though. Sorry I dont have a definite fix, but on this one, there is a lot of trouble you can get into if you try to do it by yourself, even though its posible (ps: I did not encounter this prob on my own.)
