Well,
I had Sprint DSL and had no trouble networking my computers together and sharing DSL. I have never had to use proxy server software or anything like ICS. Just an NWay 8 port 10/100 switch. I just logged both computers on as if they were their own hosts.
Now with Bell South, I can't get them online at the same time. They are networked together just fine. What might I need to do? Bell South of course won't help because they are now touting their own network hardware/software for a price.
I use an NWay 8 port 10/100 switch
Modem is Alcatel Speed Touch Home
Both computers are Windows 98 SE
Below is how it is set upwall

If you connect directly from the dsl/cable modem to a hub/switch with no firewall or at least NAT router, you are leaving your system wide open to the net.
The usual setup is modem to router. router to hub uplink port. computers to hub.

He's right. I'm not sure how switches work exactly, but i just finished a 7 month spree of tech support for a DSL company. The easiest way is what he suggested, dsl to router to hub to computers, however as you mentioned, there is always ICW. Alas, the previous company you used probably had NAT, (network adress translation), enabled on your old DSL modem. BellSouth does not provide this, however they may have it as an ADD-ON package. Either way, your old setup will not work. Good Luck!
