I have a question: I have an older model IBM with no operating system. I have attempted several times to get into some kind of startup, with the Win98 startup disk. I go to help, and it shows several different commands, but when I type the commands, all I see is letters, and nothing happens. Please tell me how to make this computer like my regular PC. Also, keep in mind, I'm a beginner when it comes to computers without Operating systems. Thanks

Are you trying to install Windows 98?
How old is this computer?Put the startup disk in the floppy drive.Choose start without CD Rom support. At the a:/ type fdisk.Should look like this.
A:/fdisk
Then select Y for large disk support.Select Option 3.Then select Option 1.It will then delete the partitions. Then restart with the floppy in.I always just hit ctrl alt delete.
This time you will also need to select start without CD Rom support. Then you will get a message about no partitions found.again type fdisk. This time choose option 1.It will build the partition then you will be asked if you want to use the full disk or something can't remember.Choose yes. Then when it goese thru this you will be prompted to restart.Keep the disk in.This time choose start without CD Rom support. At the a prompt type.format C:/u
Should look like this.
A:/format c:/u
Let it get all the way to 100% then you will be asked about Voulume Lable hit enter. Then restart again.Keep disk in.This time choose start WITH CD Rom support.Put your 98 CD in and at the a prompt type D:/ setup.exe.

Place the W98 startup disk in the floppy disk drive, and start the computer. It will take you to an A:\> prompt.
From the A:\> prompt you can follow the directions given by Christopher.
There is a good website with How To guides Here
If you are trying to install W98, you need to look at the following topics: Partitioning a Hard Drive, Formatting a Hard Drive, and Installing Windows 98.
We are assuming that your computer has a recognized hard disk drive, floppy disk drive, and a CD-ROM drive.
Getting the old PC to run might be a challenge that you will enjoy. If you need help, you are in the right place.
