I have an IBM Aptiva (Model #2158-240) and it has a driver for an ESS AudioDrive sound card, and I'm trying to find out if it is somehow possible to be able to control the Tone settings (Bass & Treble) in the Windows Volume Control. Right now when I go into that the Bass and the Treble settings are grayed out so I can't use them, but is there any way to make it so I can? I've tried updating my sound card driver, but that didn't help anything, is it possible to somehow enable these settings without having a driver that supports it (possibly a registery key)? And without having to use a secondary program like WinAmp?

Open up your sound control and go to options and select properties and put check marks in the ones you want and then they will not be greyed out any more.

I found this problem of grayed out Bass and Tone controls on several sound cards. Some old (ISA) Yamaha cards were OK in this respect. No amount of latest drivers/settings change would enable this setting for me. So, this is a mystery to me as well. I hope somebody knows the answer here.

As Dilawar said, no drivers are going to fix this. The sound card has to be designed to offer these options. If the boxes are greyed out, then your card doesn't support tone controls.

I emailed IBM and they said that this is a software limitation.
