What size is your hard drive? What company made it? What is the date of manufacture (usually printed on a label on the top of the drive)?
Most of the time, you can download a program from the drive maunfacturer which you can use to test / repair the drive. This usually requires downloading and saving the program to your hard drive, placing a blank floppy in the floppy drive, and then running the program you just downloaded. This will create a floppy that you boot the system with, and then you can safely test the hard drive, and often repair the defective sectors.
WARNING: DO NOT USE ANY PROGRAM THAT WAS NOT SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR YOUR HARD DRIVE!
IBM provides a program called DFT (drive Fitness Test). You can use it to TEST any drive, but it will NOT make any repairs unless you happen to have an IBM hard drive.
Post your answers here, and we'll be able to give you more specific information.
