Bad RAM???

Someone told me that my system may keep freezing up because I might have a bad memory chip. I also heard that if there were a problem with my memory, my system would let me know by a distinctive beep at startup. I looked up the beep codes in the manual for my motherboard (ASUS a7v-e) and it states that a memory problem is identified by a looped beep at startup. If everything is okay, the computer will only sound one, short beep at startup - which is what happens when I startup my system. Is this information trust-worthy? If so, then memory is not the problem. If this information is true, but not always dependable...then I'll try changing the memory. Any feedback?

Pebbles - You were told correct. The key word in there is "may". Bad RAM could cause freezing - but I doubt that is your problem. I believe the POST (beeps at startup) would identify the problem. You may need additional memory - more memory is almost always better. You could be freezing for various reason - more useful information would be when you are freezing, after how long on the pc, how many apps are open or have been open, what are you running at the time of the freeze - things like that.

You can d/l the free Doc Memory Tester from here: http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp
You can view the .pdf first and see if you like it.
It fits on a floppy and you execute the test from there.
V 1.45a Win95/98 201 kb
V 2.0 Win98/2K+ 271 kb

Oh yeah, just some thoughts...when the comp first boots and posts, it does a memory test. In general it is quite reliable. But if the chips are not seated, dirty contacts, hairline cracks etc. which cause them to overheat/ fail, then the posting may not catch it. Just some general comments.

Hope this helps....ck

the beeps at startup will only beep if the RAM is unplugged or completely bad. if it is just flakey (inconsistant in it's problems) then it will not beep. what issues are you having exaclty, can you recreate it consistantly?

You should take a look at your CPU fan and make sure that it is clean and spinning. Your problem can be caused by CPU overheating.
