I have an IBM system that will not boot,I keep getting the message enter correct name of command interpreter (eg, c;\command.com) A>.

I have tried to boot with Windows 95 bootable disk with no success, my friend has formatted his hard drive and i am not very versed in fixing this kind of problem, Please Help.

If you have a boot disk, just type: a:\command.com when it asks for the location of the command interpreter. It should boot using the command.com on the floppy. If it boots, you can then copy command.com to c:\, but I would just use the sys command if possible. The syntax is: a:\sys.com c: if sys.com is on the floppy. Otherwise, just copy command.com to c:\
I am sure there are other ways to do it also.

I have tried the above solution and it does not seem to work in my condition. When I attempt boot up (from newly installed win98)It asks "Type the name of the Command Interpreter (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM). I have tried typing a:\COMMAND.COM and sys C:, although system files are succesfully transfered, neither seem to work for me. What else can I do? FYI, I am working on a Compaq Presario 7240. I have completley formatted and created their Diagnostic partition.

I had this problem with my boot disks, too. Your computer might have a virus in the dos partition that infects each disk that enters the a:, corrupting command.com. Very annoying. Have a friend make you a boot-disk (WIN95 or 98) with antivirus software and be sure to do a COLD BOOT. Hopefully it will find a virus. The next step would be to carefully clean all your other floppys. Then re-install everything. I hope this helps and good luck.

the file command.com is missing or corupted and also in config.sys Line 13-BTCDROM.SYS, 14- ASPI@DOS.SYS,15-ASPI8DOS.SYS,16- ASPI14DOS>SYS, 17-ASPI8U2>SYS, 18-ASPICD.SYS are also corupted. And then I also get a warning message that the high memory area (HMA) is not available. Additional low memeory (below 640k) will be used instead. how to I corect these coruptions or would you advise be to just fdisk the hard drive and restall windows98 from scratch. I have already tried to reinstall windows98 over without formatting the hard drive.

Hope you have answers.
