When I'm using scandisk n windows'98 I'm getting a message that 'correpted File Allocation Table is not allowing the Scandisk to fix this dirve' and exit from scandisk. How can I fix this. any one please.
Ajay

You can try CHKDSK. But I would first back up any data you can not afford to lose.

In W98 chkdsk will just point you to scandisk.
Use a bootdisk then type:
c:
scandisk
Hit Return after each command.
This uses the DOS version of scandisk (instead of scandskw in Windows).

.... or perhaps even easier:
Tap F8 whilst booting then select "Command Prompt Only" from startup menu. Type:
scandisk

I just sent you a copy of norton disk doctor. It does a better job of repairing the allocation tables than scandisk.
Unzip the file I sent to a floppy disk. Boot to 'command prompt only' as Derek explains above. Put the disk with the unzipped file in the a: drive and type a:\ndd and enter.
You can also unzip it to your hard drive and run it from there. However, you'd need to be able to browse to the download location via dos. If you're not familiar with dos you're probably better off running it from a floppy disk.

Hi DAVE,
"I just sent you a copy of norton disk doctor. It does a better job of repairing the allocation tables than scandisk."
Funny how that works. When M$ bought NDD in the 1990s they apperently either were too cheap to buy the real deal, or maybe they 'patched' it. LOL
Oh well. Those were the days when Peter Norton made good SW and compaq made good computers.

I'll drink to that.
It's a good day when you learn something

Yeah, Norton utilites is probably the only remaining Norton/symantec software that's any good. The NDD I sent was from 1997 but it sees fat32 partitions OK.

Mine's dated 1994, so I assume it's FAT32 challenged.

Dear Mech, Derek, Deven & Dan
Thanks 4 the reponses,
But chkdsk is not working. It sends a message: 'chekdisk is not able to fix the problem, better use scandisk'
I already used Scandisk from Dos prompt. but it also failed & send a message: 'Error in File allacation Table is priventing scandisk to fix this drive'
When I attempt to format the drive, I got a message: 'media unusable'
Then I erased Windows & installed Linux, The system is working very good.
Can any body tell me why this? & how can I install the Windows 98 Se in the same HDD
thanks once again
regards
AjayAjay

Hi, Just a thought. There are two identical FAT tables kept by the system on the HDrive. The defective FAT is "Fixed" by copying the good FAT to it. If SCANDISK can not fix the FAT then both are probably bad. Also, as already said, Win 98 Chkdisk does very little checking. Use Scandisk or the Drive Manufacturer's diagnosis program.
Good Luck, Jim

NDD would have fixed the FAT tables but since you already removed windows that's a moot point.
Not sure where the 'media unusable' message came from. It may have been a bad floppy bootdisk, depending how your bios would report the problem. That message usually seems to be associated with cd burning.
But generally you'd boot from a floppy bootdisk and run fdisk. Answer Y to large disk support and then option 3 to remove the partition. Reboot and run fdisk again to recreate the partition. Reboot again and format the drive. (Are you familiar with the usage of these dos commands?) Then you'd install 98.

Thanks everybody,
Now my problem is some what resolved.
First Partitioned my HDD using 'cfdisk' utility in linux. Then Installed luit linux 0.4.
Then erased all partitions using 'cfdisk'
and restarted.
Then repartitioned HDD using Segate Disk Manager utility & restarted.
Using Segate Disk Manager Utility upgraded 'Mbr'& restarted
Then I run NDD from CD & done 'diognise the disk' option.
Now It reports my 'C' drive didnot find any errors, FAT is good, but my D, E & F drives (8 GB HDD, partisioned 4) containing 'an error in the Free Cluster area of drives, NDD cannot fix it.'
please tell me anybody how it is fixed ? & why it shows?
My HDD is working so far properly.regards,
Ajay

"Hi, Just a thought."
... as always, something of an exaggeration, and really only an echo
"My HDD is working so far properly"
Time to leave well enough alone (this could have been *simple*) - just proceed with the installation and see how that goes
I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter
