Bad file Allocation Table

I got a big problem, I started my system after installing a new hard drive and now my main drive won't boot ,it is saying "bad allocation table Drive C" is there a way to fix this without having to reformat?? Please anyone.

Scandisk should repair the FAT tables. (That's why there's two, the good copy can be written over the bad copy.) Either boot with a bootdisk or use the Ctrl key on bootup (just after you see "Starting Windows 98") to get the MS Boot Menu. Choose Command prompt only, and type in scandisk c:.

Before you do anything drastic, disconnect the new drive to make sure it isn't causing problems.
If the FATs cannot be recovered, a 'file recovery' prograam should be able to help.
