L1 cache is what is called "On Chip". This means that it is RAM (specifically SRAM) that is located on the actual processor chip. This combination makes it very fast. It is used to store frequently used info. L2 cache is another SRAM chip that is located on a socket on the motherboard. L2 cache is more and more frequently being moved to "On Chip" also. Since it isn't on the chip it is a little slower. There are a variety of types but most are called "Pipeline Burst". Also since it is not on the chip it is accessed less frequently per clock cycle. You can go to places like What is it or Ask Jeeves to get a better idea of what you want to know. wcr3d
