okay- I fix computers and my biggest nightmare is backing up drivers before a reinstall. Most drivers do not fit on a floppy. They are too big. So, in the past I've sacrificed- by having to search the internet for the drivers after I reinstall. This is a true pain in the xxx! I looked into buying a kanguru so I could put the drivers on it and transfer them, but not every computer I fix has a usb. My question- how do you back up the drivers (prepared to do so in any circumstance- any computer) before you reinstall? Or is everyone like me- having to spend an hour and a half searching for the driver after the fact.

Winzip has a feature to span multiple disks. Check out the FAQ here: http://winzip.com/xspan.htm
Hope that helps :)

joxman- cool beans man! I just saved my video driver to 2 disk. It works PERFECT! YES! My nightmare is OVER! THANK YOU!

No probs :) Another Idea is to create a text file with Hyperlinks to the actual download file for your clients and keep that on a diskette. That way you could have all you clients specific drivers on one diskette and the places to get 'em :)
Hope that helps :)

that sounds good too- but I have 1 more question- when I unload the drivers over multiple disks- is there any tricks to the trade? Or do they unload normally? It didn't say in that link you provided.

I guess what i'm asking is when I put them on the c drive in a computer- how do I get it all back to 1 file?

The way it works is you insert the first disk and double click the file. Winzip will then ask you to insert the last disk of the spandisk and just follow the prompts after that. Extract them to a known folder or make one(I suggest c:\tmpDriver)then when Windows asks you for the location just browse to that folder. I had many megabytes of pics on my old 486 and used this process and it worked fine for me :)

cool! Thanks again! And thanks for that filelibrary link! I read that other post and went there- that'll come in very handy too. You're one worth while teckie!

And yet another option is to back them up on the net. If you have a personal website just upload 'em there or check out these services http://useful.webwizards.net/wbfs.htm
Hope that helps :)

here's one for you. I need the file kbdgr.kbd so I can (hopefully) get my keyboard to type in german. I went to control panel-keyboard, and tried to add german, but it is asking for this file. I checked the library, no go.

i aint used this program but am curious if it would make backups easier
Driver Wizard
http://drivers.on-line.net.nz/cgi-bin/driver.pl?wizard

just went there an attempted to download it (it sounds like a good thing), but the download link was a dead link. Thanks though, if you find a working one- post back

Try this: Create a text with
=================
REGEDIT4[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\keyboard layout\preload\1]
@="00010407"================
and save it as GermanKey.regGrt this prog http://www.easydesksoftware.com/down.htm
and extract kbdgr.kbd to your system folder (c:\windows\system)Click and merge the reg file.
Not sure if you need to actually use the reg file. I got some of this info at http://www.easydesksoftware.com/keyboard.htm
Hope that helps :)

I don't want to change my English, but add German and toggle when needed. Does your instructions allow me to keep English? Or totally change to German?

Just tried it again. I get:An error has occurred processing the request...
Unable to process FTP Request
ftp://downloads.on-line.net.nz/pub/software/Driver_Wizard_setup.exe
It seems to go there without trying to load at all- so maybe it's my computer (can't imagine what's wrong), but I tried several times and get the same thing

Get a 10gb spare HD and slave it to back things up. Get yourself an ide cable with a master and slave postition incase you work on a machine that only has the single cable. I keep the HD and cable in a small canvas pouch on my notebook carrying case. It has saved me a lot of trouble in the past.
Since your doing this all the time the cost is justified by the time it saves you. If your like me.. you have worked on enough dead computers to get yourself a free one :). Gotta love water damage!
mesich.com has a link to a product called "windriver expert". This amazing tool searches your computer and locates all the drivers for you.
PS: Sites looking great Mesich! Keep up the good work!

I don't know if you can toggle between the two or if they are simultaneous. It was just a quick search on google.
the link I got for the file is ftp://downloads.on-line.net.nz/pub/software/DriverWizard.zip
the link worked the first time, but when I went back it froze......keep trying :)

Yeah ShutMeUpOrDown has the best solution for backing up stuff, but dwin's original Q was an anywhere anytime type Q :)

Try WinDrvExpert -- it will find and save all the drivers on you PC: (Click on this and download the zip file):

thanks Joxman- I'll check it out too.
And thanks for answering shutmeup. He/she has a good solution for 1 coputer, I guess he/she didnt read the rest of my post. But it doesn't matter, you gave me the solution

Ummmmm Dwin were you able to get the German Keyboard thingy to work and were you able to Download gdivens51 download manager???

that WinDriver Expert sounds like it might be a handy program to have too.
