Comment:

i started anew thread because the other won was getting long and i think my problem is different now.

im getting the message "operating system missing" so this is what ive done.
i have removed the hard drive from the bosses puter and slaved it in my sons puter with ME in it. when i explore the drive it shows it at 7.36 gb and i know it is a 40 gig.
any suggestions on how to format it and bring it back?

i have also put my sons HD in the bosses puter and it boots and runs just fine ruling out any memory probs.

thanks,
bryan

What's on your boss's disk? anything you need to save?

Try putting your boss's disk in your son's computer as a secondary or slave drive and scan it with antivirus, then browse around it and see how big it is, what is on it, what your son's OS thinks is wrong with it.

Post back.

the other won

As suggested there, seems to be a problem with the hard drive, or drive overlay

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience

go here http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/drivers/discwiz.html

and download the dos, window version or do the online setup. IF after that you have a problem report back, but do the above first.

The safest would be to download the dos version and after makeing the floppy , put the hdd back into your booses comp and run the floppy there. Less posiblity of messing up your sons hdd.

I can't follow who's who or what's what in this mess.

First get the drive set right in BIOS.

Use Ranish or delpart or whatever it tales to clear the drive.

Hi again

I think why you need a diagnostic has been explained, but I'll explain it a different way for you pooky.

Your boss had a computer system that went funny. Why it did this could involve a few factors.

The most suttle failure, can be system memory. All diagnostics and OS rely on good memory. This is why (the first thing you do with funny problems), you check it with a bootable floppy or CD memory diagnostic. You can run an OS with out many obvious problems, using faulty memory. (it has a habit of not doing much for the data though)

It looks like you don't want to save any of the data on the drive anyway. eg reinstall.

Before putting an OS on the drive, you should verify the drive's physical operation. Seatools will verify the drive and will indicate if there might be a cabling problem as well.

Having completed all of that sucsessfully, you will be ready to put on a new OS.

A good practice/habit is to zero the drive, some wiping utilities actaully zero such as Killdisk (they offer a free version, which will do the job quite well) The main purpose of Zeroing is some very odd chars can be written to the drive which many partition utilities used to have trouble with. (So its habit ) Its hard for me to say if the more recent partitoning tools would have the same problems as the earlier versions. Anyhow you can watch killdisk verify the drive with zeroing and see any areas where it has problems.

After that is done, it should be smooth sailing reinstalling the OS.
